Businesses in Scarborough are being encouraged to invest in netting to deter seagulls after complaints from residents about seagull mess on the town's buildings and pavements.
Scarborough Council says it's launched a twin “prevention and management approach” to tackle the issue.
A council spokesman said: “We will contribute 50%, up to a maximum of £2,000, towards the costs of gull-proofing any private buildings in defined areas of Filey, Scarborough and Whitby."
Councillor Michelle Donohue Moncrieff said: “Gulls are part of life in our borough and, love them or loathe them, we’ve got to try to find better ways of managing how we live with them.
“We accept we need to do more to keep the pavements cleaner and, in return, we need those responsible for private buildings to join the collective effort to tackle the problem by installing material to prevent nesting."
The council's also taken delivery of a new high-pressure hot water cleaning machine to tackle the problem.
Councillor Tony Randerson said: "Our dedicated officers will waste no time in putting it to work to make our pavements cleaner and more pleasant places to be."

Read MoreA total of nine people have tested positive for coronavirus at the Arla Foods creamery in Settle, it's been confirmed.
The company, which employs 86 people at the site, said a number of staff and some contractors working on site had tested positive for the virus.
Since the cases were confirmed, Arla said it had taken the precaution to carry out full site testing for all employees and contractors.
An Arla spokesperson said: “This site has reported nine confirmed cases from employees and contractors in the last week, and while this is relatively low, given the close-knit community at Settle, the contractors that have been visiting the site for essential work and the short timeframe in which the cases have been confirmed, we have decided to implement full site testing for our colleagues and all contractors.
"This decision has been made with the support of the local authority and Public Health England.”
The nine cases at the Settle creamery have led to a sharp rise in the infection rate in the Craven area, from 1.8 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending 9 August to 24.5 in the week ending 16 August.
Dr Lincoln Sargeant, North Yorkshire’s Director of Public Health said: “We have seen an increase in the number of new cases across the county from approximately two to three per day to about five a day in the last week.
"In addition to the cases associated with Arla Foods, which accounts for the biggest increase in cases in Craven, the increase in Craven reflects this background increase as well as new cases that are detected through whole home testing of residents and staff in care homes as part ongoing measures to prevent outbreaks. “

British holidaymakers face another scramble to return home to avoid coronavirus quarantine after Croatia, Austria and Trinidad & Tobago were removed from the safe travel list.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced on Thursday that travellers from those countries to the UK would be required to self-isolate for 14 days with the restrictions coming into effect from 04:00 on Saturday.
Figures released by Department for Transport indicate that the weekly incidence (cases) per 100,000 for Croatia increased from 10.4 on August 12 to 27.4 on August 19, a 164% increase.
Liam and Jodie, from Keighley, paid around £800 to travel home from northern Croatia via Munich in order to beat the quarantine deadline, after finding it impossible to book a direct flight in time.
"There wasn't an alternative. There are no flights from Pula to the UK on Fridays, only a flight from Zagreb to London runs but obviously that was fully booked," Liam told the PA news agency.
"The only (other) flights available were with stops in Spain through Ryanair but then we would have to quarantine anyway," he added.
Liam, a mechanical assembly engineer, said he had started a new job recently so "didn't want to miss another two weeks' work".
He added that the pair had tried to make the most of their trip despite "the distraction of not knowing what's going to happen", and were treating their visit to Munich as a "city break we got as an extra".
