This year several events which would have taken place in West Yorkshire had to be cancelled and various restrictions were put in place due to the ongoing pandemic.

These included included dispersal orders being put in place in Leeds giving extra support to officers to stop unlicensed music events or large gatherings breaching coronavirus restrictions.

Assistant Ch Con Tim Kingsman said: “This is normally a very busy time for us and I understand people being frustrated at not being able to enjoy themselves in the same way as they might have done in previous years.

“But major events would not only have breached restrictions, they could have put people’s health at risk too.

“That's why I'm pleased the weekend passed off without any major incidents and I would like to thank the vast majority of residents for their understanding and patience who stayed at home and complied with the restrictions.”

Films shot in Yorkshire are benefiting from the delayed release of Hollywood blockbusters amid the pandemic, industry experts have said.

James Bond, Top Gun and Avatar have been delayed, leaving reopening cinemas with fewer movies to choose from.

That means smaller films shot and part-financed in Yorkshire are getting more big-screen releases.

Craig Shurn, from The Light Cinemas, said: "Films being pushed back has given us the opportunity to diversify and explore other types of content we may not have usually shown."

The chain recently started showing new British film Hope Gap, which is filmed in Leeds and Doncaster.

Part-financed by Screen Yorkshire, the film is one of a number of productions being released while blockbusters are being delayed.

"To be able to have those opportunities to get films like Hope Gap seen by audiences in cinemas at this time is pretty amazing," said Caroline Cooper Charles, head of creative at Screen Yorkshire.

Another upcoming Screen Yorkshire film, due to have its world premiere at the 2020 Venice Film Festival this week, is The Duke staring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren.

Filmed in Leeds and Bradford, it also received investment from Screen Yorkshire's Yorkshire Content Fund.

Students are going back to classrooms this week as coronavirus restrictions are eased in England.

Some children of essential workers have been going to school, but now most pupils are expected to return to schools across Yorkshire.

Jonathan Bean, headteacher of Churchfield Primary School, in Cudworth, said: "It's a day we've been counting down to and preparing for for long time, as I'm sure many families have as well.

"We're hoping for at least 90% to 95% [attendance]. We do have some families that have been away, so have to quarantine. But we're hoping for near full capacity.

"Safety is a huge part of it and keeping children safe is our number one priority, but making school look and feel like school - an engaging and welcoming environment - has been key."

  7. Sheffield sports clubs submit case to reopen Ponds Forgepublished at 15:33 British Summer Time 1 September 2020

Members of Sheffield's diving, water polo and swimming clubs - all of which usually use the city's Ponds Forge sports centre - have presented what they say is the business case for reopening the site as coronavirus restrictions are eased.

Ponds Forge, one of only a few specialist diving venues in England, was closed in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Its owners, Sheffield City Trust, say they currently can't afford to open it again.

The clubs say that as Ponds Forge is likely to stay closed to the public until April at the earliest, they're asking the trust to open the diving pit and 50m Olympic pool to their members from October until April - costing about £90,000 a month.

The clubs said they'd commit to paying about £30,000 a month to cover some of the costs, with a further £60,000 a month needed from outside help such as Sheffield City Council.

Between them, the clubs have produced 21 Olympic and Paralympic athletes over the last 30 years.

In the past week, officers have responded to six similar incidents, including robberies on Trafalgar Street and Rockingham Street (pictured), according to South Yorkshire Police.

An 18-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of this morning on suspicion of robbery and possession of an offensive weapon and he remains in custody, police say.

Det Insp Ben Wood said: "Some of the victims of these incidents have been left incredibly traumatised by the threats made towards them.

"Our investigation is ongoing and I would urge anyone with information to contact us, especially if you have been a victim of a similar incident."

Leeds City Council's chief executive Tom Riordan said he doesn't believe the city is yet at a stage where it would have to consider introducing local lockdown measures like those seen in Kirklees, Bradford and Calderdale.

However, the case rate in the city is rising, he warned.

In a speech broadcast to a group of councillors this morning, Mr Riordan added that more work was being done to avoid "raves and unlicensed events" to prevent the spread of the virus among young people.

He said: "Our work continues intensively. The case rate in Leeds is rising and we are what you might call ‘bubbling under’ the national watch list. Our rates are up to a 3% positivity, which is three in every 100 people tested are positive.

"Our testing rates are very high now, which is good because that is what we have to do to keep on top of things.

"We are on the radar of the national "gold" meeting, but we are not yet at a stage where we are likely to require movement restrictions, in our view, as our neighbouring councils have had to do."

  13. Police renew appeal to mum of dead baby found in Bradfordpublished at 11:59 British Summer Time 1 September 2020

Police have renewed their appeal for the mother of a newborn baby found dead in Bradford to come forward.

    Bowling Back Lane

The girl, wrapped in a pink towel featuring the island of Fuerteventura, was found on Thursday 20 August on Bowling Back Lane.

Writing on social media this morning, external, West Yorkshire Police said there's "growing concern" for the welfare of the baby's mum and renewed its appeal for information to trace her.

Speaking last week Sara Hollins, head of midwifery at Bradford Teaching Hospitals, said: "The baby was still born and the birth was likely to have been very traumatic for the mother.

"This has given us very grave concerns for the mother's wellbeing.

"She may be showing signs of infection, suffering from symptoms associated with increased blood loss and is likely to be extremely traumatised."

The maternity service says its main priority is making sure the mum is safe and well and gets any treatment she needs.

Anyone who knows someone who concealed a pregnancy, or who was recently pregnant but now isn't, is being urged to contact police or the maternity service.

  14. Covid case rise 'almost unavoidable' as schools reopenpublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 1 September 2020

School pupils will begin returning to classrooms from today, with many children attending for the first time in six months.

Back in March, schools closed to most children in Yorkshire in a bid to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Now the UK's chief medical adviser, Prof Chris Whitty, has said children are more likely to be harmed by not returning to school than if they catch coronavirus.

Dr Cheryl Walter, a virologist and lecturer in microbiology at the University of Hull, said: "It's almost unavoidable we are going to see a rise in the number of cases.

"Hopefully it's not significant, but we are almost certainly going to see a rise in the number of cases.

"Young people that have Covid-19 that might not even realise, they're going to be mixing in large groups, they're not going to be wearing masks all the time. We need to get this right."

The four bars, all on Call Lane, were shut to customers after a member of staff contracted Covid-19.

All staff at Oporto, Jake's Bar, Neon Cactus and Power Corruption and Lies will now be tested for the virus.

The venues, which are run by Akito Bar Group, released a joint statement on Monday confirming the "precautionary measure".

The statement said: "We are working with Public Health England to follow the correct steps and a full deep-clean will be carried out in all sites."

The bars had been open for the bank holiday weekend, although the worker is understood to have quarantined at home during this period.

It appears the member of staff was employed at Oporto, but isolated after having symptoms, and had not been working for the past few days while they awaited test results.

Edmund faces a tough task to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in seven attempts, however, with 17-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic lying in wait in round two.

It will be the seventh meeting between the two - and their second at Flushing Meadows - with Edmund's only victory over Djokovic coming on the Madrid clay in 2018.

Police were called to a venue on Kitson Road, Hunslet, at about 17:30 on Sunday.

Supt Chris Bowen said: “While the event had been granted a temporary licence and a public safety assessment had been carried out beforehand, it was clear on attendance those present were not complying with the restrictions.

“As a result the organiser closed down the event at the request of the police.”

Meanwhile, on Sunday about £20,000 of music equipment was seized from an address in the Chapeltown area of Leeds.

It was found in a garden and was suspected of being kept for an unlicensed music event.

Supt Bowen said: “Unlicensed music events and large gatherings of people only serve to spread this deadly virus, and we will take action against those who organise and attend them.”
