Council leader Judith Blake says she believes Leeds will be made an "area of intervention" as coronavirus cases rise.

That means "more household restrictions along the lines of those already in force across three of the West Yorkshire districts in Bradford, Kirkless and Calderdale," she says.

The rules are expected to change from midnight, Ms Blake adds.

It would mean people are not allowed to go inside others' homes or gardens.

It would be same rules as those already in place in Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees.

    This means:

    • People will not be allowed to meet people they do not live with inside a private home or garden, except where they have formed a support bubble
    • People will not be allowed to visit someone else's home or garden, even if they live outside Bradford, Kirklees or Calderdale
    • People being strongly advised not to socialise with others they do not live with in other indoor public venues - such as pubs, restaurants, cafes, shops, places of worship, community centres, leisure and entertainment venues, or visitor attractions
    • People will not be allowed to socialise outdoors in a group of no more than six people from different households
    • People will not be allowed to visit friends or family in care homes, other than in exceptional circumstances. Care homes should restrict visits to these circumstances

Leeds City Council had asked for meetings in gardens to be allowed - but the authority is expecting the new rules to ban this.

The government is expected to announce new restrictions later.

Is Leeds heading for more coronavirus restrictions?

The city council has tried a couple of times now to say to the government: "We know the area best - this is what we think should happen".

Last week, the authority suggested a curfew - this week it was a ban on households mixing indoors.

On Wednesday, the Covid-19 rate in the city was 89.3 cases per 100,000 people, with council leaders asking ministers to implement the measure.

It sounds like the government now wants Leeds to fall in line with Bradford - and a ban on meeting households in homes and gardens is expected to be announced for the city.

Leeds City Council is holding a press briefing in the next few minutes.

Since Thursday, businesses have been required by law to provide a QR code for the NHS test and trace app which was launched yesterday.

Sheffield City Council said its officers will visit hospitality, leisure and "close contact" venues like hairdressers to offer "advice and guidance" on minimising the spread of the coronavirus.

It said at businesses where customers and staff weren't being properly protected, "action will be taken to make the premises safe".

This could be advice to the business or enforcement notices which could then lead to prosecution.

Mark Jones, from Sheffield City Council, said: “We are talking to local businesses and inspecting sites across Sheffield to understand how they are managing risks in line with their specific business activity.

“All businesses are in scope for spot checks, which means businesses of any size and in any sector can receive an unannounced check to ensure they are Covid-secure."

  20. Council approves £1.6m to reopen Sheffield's Ponds Forgepublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

Plans to invest up to £1.6m in reopening a pool in Sheffield closed during the Covid-19 outbreak have been approved.

    Ponds ForgeImage source, PA Media

Ponds Forge will open again next month after the city council agreed the extra funding.

It had been due to stay closed until April 2021 after Sheffield City Trust deemed it too expensive to reopen.

The decision, which comes on top of £15m given to the trust in August, follows a campaign by local sports clubs against the closure.

The facility, built for the 1991 World Student Games, is used by a number of swimmers and divers who have competed at Olympic games and other international events, as well as the general public.

Last month, Sheffield City Trust, which runs Ponds Forge and a number of other leisure and entertainment venues in the city, said it planned to mothball the site along with the Sheffield Arena and City Hall.
