  2. Concern after Leeds boy, 8, gets conflicting virus resultpublished at 08:01 British Summer Time 24 September 2020

Concerns have been raised about testing reliability after a family from Leeds received conflicting results about whether their eight-year-old son had coronavirus.

Archie Hume received a positive result on Saturday but two days later a text message said he had tested negative.

Father Max Hume said it took further phone calls to establish that his son did have the virus.

Mr Hume said: "The concern is, if we'd have received that text message within 48 hours we'd have been out most of the weekend with a little boy who was carrying the virus."

Meanwhile, another family had to wait five days to access a test for their 13-year-old son who was showing symptoms of the virus.

After trying more than 200 times, Natalie Murdin said the only appointment she was offered was at a test centre in Darlington - 53 miles away from their home in York.

The government said it was providing tests on an unprecedented scale.

  6. Leeds pantomime postponed for a year due to coronaviruspublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 23 September 2020

A Leeds theatre's announced its Christmas pantomime won't now go ahead because expected guidance on indoor social distancing from the government will come "too late".

The Carriageworks Theatre says this year's Aladdin panto is now postponed until 2021 - the first time in the venue’s history the annual pantomime has been cancelled.

Pantomime producer Paul Holman said: “It's with great sadness we've come to the unprecedented conclusion we have no other choice but to postpone this year’s production of Aladdin.

"With no further government guidance on social distancing expected until at least November, even if we were given the go-ahead at that time, it would be too late to put together a production on the scale we'd want to present," he added.

Meanwhile, Matthew Sims, from Leeds City Council, said: “Last year’s production of Sleeping Beauty played to over 20,000 people and we’re acutely aware postponing this year’s pantomime is a big loss to the local community."

Aladdin is now planned to run at the theatre from 26 November 2021 to 9 January 2022.

The 29-year-old was arrested yesterday on suspicion of criminal damage after vehicles were damaged when acid was thrown on them, according to the South Yorkshire force.

He has since been released under investigation.

Officers are appealing for CCTV images following the incidents on Carter Knowle Road and Montrose Road in Nether Edge.

Sgt James Marshall said: "As well as the arrest made yesterday, we have seized a significant amount of materials, including CCTV footage, that we will now be reviewing as part of the investigation.

“I would continue to appeal to anyone who has information to contact us, especially people living on these roads who might have CCTV footage of the incidents. Even small bits of footage could help us with our inquiries.”

  11. Coronavirus 'nightmare' for family-run brewery in Barnsleypublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 23 September 2020

A brewery in South Yorkshire says it's faced an "absolute nightmare" over the last six months as it's tried to continue trading during the coronavirus lockdown.

Family-run Acorn Brewery, which is based in Wombwell, Barnsley, has been making beer since 2003.

But because of the pandemic it has lost more than half its staff through redundancy and furlough.

Head brewer and managing director Dave Hughes (pictured above) said the new 22:00 curfew on pubs being introduced from Thursday will be tough on his business, with fewer barrels of beer already being sold.

He said: “We have to do what the government says, but it’s tough. It seems our sector has been hit and hit and hit.

"If our numbers drop again, it would be very worrying. We’ve been established 17 years but that can soon go if we get another full lockdown.

“It’s been an absolute nightmare the past six months. As business owners the stress and anxiety it’s caused is not good at all. It had just started to feel like we were seeing a few green shoots, but now they have been trimmed away."

Mr Hughes added that most pubs are "very, very safe" and that he felt safer in a pub "than doing my daily shopping".

  13. Couple 'look for positives' over new Covid wedding rulepublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 23 September 2020

From Monday 28 September, only 15 people will be able to attend weddings and civil partnerships in groups of six due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Funerals can still take place with up to 30 people

Beth Turner, who is due to marry her partner Andrew Taylor next month in Sheffield, said she had been upset by the "initial shock" after the Prime Minister's announcement, but was now trying to focus on the positives.

"Once you realise what's happening and that your wedding day is not going to be your wedding day anymore you think, OK, we will just have to get on with it. There are worse things happening to other people, we're not losing our jobs, we have to look for the positives," she said.

Mr Taylor said despite the reduction in guest numbers, the suggestion the restrictions could remain in place for at least six months "at least gives us some confidence we can do the important bit on the day".

In 2018, York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust announced it had successfully bid for the goverment funding to create a Combined Emergency Assessment Unit as part of a £40m conversion of the site.

Just over half that amount is to be used to create the unit, which would see surgeons and the medical staff working together at the front door of the emergency unit.

The unit will be created alongside the Emergency Department and the on-site Urgent Treatment Centre, creating a “comprehensive and integrated” urgent and emergency care hub.

The work is scheduled to be completed in October 2023.

When the funding was announced in 2018, the then chief executive of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Mike Proctor, said: “This much-needed development means we can improve and streamline how patients are assessed, admitted and treated, which should reduce the time people wait in the department, and ultimately improve patient safety.”

In addition to the improvements to the Emergency Department, the funds will also enable essential infrastructure upgrades on the Scarborough site, including several million pounds being used to upgrade the hospital’s power supply.

A major music festival which was due to be held in Leeds in November after being postponed earlier in the year due to the coronavirus pandemic will not now go ahead, it's been confirmed.

    Guitar

The Live at Leeds festival began in 2007 and has been held every year since at venues and spaces across the city, attracting about 10,000 people.

However, due to the pandemic, the event - featuring about 200 artists and over 20 stages - was moved from its original date on the May Day bank holiday weekend to Saturday 28 November.

But in a statement, organisers now say, external: "With current guidance it's now clear that won't be possible and certainly wouldn't be the Live at Leeds experience we've all grown to enjoy."

They add that "some exciting things" will instead be planned for Live at Leeds 2021 and refunds for this year's event will be available from point of purchase.
