East Riding of Yorkshire Council has introduced Meat Free Mondays - an international campaign whose aim is to reduce meat consumption and help stop climate change.

But parent Liz Sellars, whose daughter goes to Kilham Primary School, near Driffield, says there should still be a choice for students.

She says: "When I send my daughter off to school, I just presume there's always going to be a choice on the menu and things aren't going to be dictated to that 'You are on Meat-Free Monday'."

Ms Sellars adds that it's important to support agricultural businesses in the area.

Responding, the council says Meat-Free Monday has been introduced to accommodate children’s changing tastes and choices.

David Johnston, the authority's commercial strategic manager, says: "The catering services team will consider the feedback to the new menu and will consult with our schools, looking at alternative options, if schools feel it is appropriate."

The Hull Learning Partnership said it was doing it in conjunction with Hull City Council because of the rising number of cases.

Helen Christmas, public health lead for children and young people, said: “While the number of people with coronavirus in Hull remains much lower than the national and regional averages, we are now seeing a rise, and therefore taking this action to help prevent spread of the virus in schools.

"Secondary school staff, visitors and pupils will be expected to wear face coverings in indoor communal spaces where 2m-distancing is challenging, not including classrooms and when eating or drinking."
