Read MoreAn urgent warning for people to be look out for telephone scams has been issued after a North Yorkshire resident "lost thousands of pounds" to a caller claiming to be requesting payment for unpaid taxes.
The most common telephone scams are individuals claiming to be from HMRC about an unpaid tax bill, police said.
The North Yorkshire force is also warning of scams where fraudsters claim to be from Amazon about a Prime subscription or scammers posing as the police.
Financial Abuse Safeguarding Officer Andy Fox said: "If you receive any calls like this, hang up immediately.
"Never transfer money on the request of a phone call from someone you do not know and if you are ever asked to lie to your bank or the police as to why you are transferring money, it is more than likely to be a scam."
Covid testing for people who have no symptoms of the virus is now available in York.
Booking for the free rapid symptom-free tests is open for individuals who come into contact with lots of other people as part of their work, City of York Council says.
The tests will initially be available to residents who work in the retail, hospitality or transport sector, including taxi drivers.
The authority says it will look at making the tests available to other groups in the coming months.
Tests can be booked online, external or by phoning 01904 551 559.
A Hull man has been given a suspended jail sentence for giving immigration advice without being legally qualified.
Gary Pounder, 59, pleaded guilty at Hull Magistrates’ Court to three counts of breaking the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.
The court heard Pounder, of Cladshaw, Orchard Park Estate, met three people and charged them for the advice, despite having no training or qualifications.
He was given three months in prison suspended for 12 months and ordered to pay £140 in compensation.
Immigration Commissioner John Tuckett said: “Gary Pounder allowed people to put their trust and future in him.
“This was a serious offence given the impact on the applicants."
Christmas has come early for a Doncaster woman after her long-lost cat was found 75 miles away in Lincolnshire.
Sybil Gillatt's three-year-old cat Laddo went missing in November 2019, shortly after the death of her husband Keith.
She spent several days looking for Laddo, but eventually came to terms with his disappearance, saying: "I've had a horrible year without Keith and Laddo, I really have."
However, Mrs Gillatt kept the cat's bedding, toys and scratching post just in case Laddo came back.
Meanwhile, in Skegness, cat lover Karen Rice found what she thought was a feral cat visiting her garden, looking "thin and very timid".
Ms Rice cared for the cat, who she named Foxglove, and eventually got him scanned for a microchip - which led to him being traced by Cats Protection back to Doncaster.
As a result, Mrs Gillatt made a 75-mile dash from South Yorkshire to be reunited with Laddo and to bring him back.
She says: "He really was so pleased to be home, he remembered everything.
"I really am so grateful to have him home again. This is the best Christmas present ever."
The driver of a van which crashed in Hull this morning has since died, police have confirmed.
The crash happened at about 08:40 when a white Transit van collided with the railings at the junction of Castle Street and Market Place.
The van's driver was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to Humberside Police.
Anyone who saw what happened, or who has dash camera footage of the incident, is being asked to get in touch with police.
A group of men seen carrying a gun, machetes and knuckle-dusters are being looked for by police after reports they smashed the window of a car in Rotherham.
Three men were seen using the machetes to attack the rear window of a car parked outside a shop on Masefield Road at about 15:30 on 9 December, according to South Yorkshire Police.
They were then seen with what was believed to be a handgun at about 17:00 that same day on Grove Road.
A further incident was reported on Wordsworth Road, in which a group was seen in possession of machetes and knuckle-dusters, police said.
Det Sgt Jamie Crawford said: “Our investigation continues at pace, and we are exploring a number of lines of inquiry.
“Additional patrols are taking place throughout the area to provide reassurance."
Anyone with information about the men or the incidents is being asked to call police.
The Labour Party has selected Tracy Brabin as its candidate for West Yorkshire metro mayor.
The newly created post is part of a £1.8bn devolution deal for the county announced by the government in March.
The former Coronation Street actor succeeded the murdered Jo Cox as MP for Batley and Spen in 2016.
Ms Brabin said her nomination was "a huge honour".
"We’ve seen this year, more than any other, how much it matters who we elect," she said.
"We need a mayor who is going to get West Yorkshire our fair share when it comes to funding, jobs, transport and a recovery from the pandemic."
The mayor will oversee policies such as transport and housing, working with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
An election is expected to be held in May next year.
