    A project aimed at tackling food waste is hoping to give out Christmas hampers to 13,000 households in Leeds.

    The Real Junk Food Project plans to distribute the equivalent of 250,000 meals throughout December to people in need.

    Project founder Adam Smith said: "We've had people telling us they can choose now to actually switch their heating on rather than worrying about whether they're going to choose between food or warmth over the Christmas period."

    A five-year-old girl from North Yorkshire's drawing of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer dancing by a "two metre apart" sign has won the Big Issue Christmas cover competition.

    Evelyn Weston beat hundreds of entries for the annual contest run by the magazine, which is sold to help homeless people.

    Her artwork of the jubilant mask-wearing reindeer is being featured on the front cover from Monday.

    Evelyn's mum Jackie said: "She's such a little artist and spends so much time drawing, it's amazing for that to be recognised."

    The year's competition was judged by author and illustrator Nadia Shireen, creator of Good Little Wolf and The Bumblebear.

    "Choosing the winner was incredibly tough, but it was felt that Evelyn's picture gave such a feelgood, positive spin on our times," she said.

    "Rudolph is wearing a mask but nothing's going to stop him dancing! Oh, this cover made me so happy. I love the bright colours and Rudolph's definitely got all the right moves."

    Leeds Rhinos director of rugby Kevin Sinfield has now raised more than £1m as he runs the final marathon of seven consecutive marathons in seven days.

    He began on 1 December and has so far run each marathon in under four hours.

    Kevin set out to raise £77,777 but the total raised now stands at £1,012,638.

    The former Leeds Rhinos, England and GB star is raising money for his teammate and friend Rob Burrow who has Motor Neurone Disease and to raise awareness of the condition.

    He's running seven marathons because Burrow always wore the number seven shirt on the rugby field.

    An Army veteran who plays the Last Post every night in memory of victims of coronavirus has said he will end his daily renditions on New Year's Eve.

    Paul Goose, from South Yorkshire, began his routine on 29 March and has played 252 times to date, only missing out on one occasion.

    He said it would be an "emotional night" after more than nine months of live-streaming his performances.

    Mr Goose's efforts have also raised nearly £9,000 for Barnsley Hospital.

    Announcing his plan to finish on 31 December he said he hoped to be joined by a number of other buglers for one final recital of the Last Post before performing a solo rendition of No More Parades.

    A man and a woman injured in an explosion at a house in Halifax are in a stable condition, police say.

    The man, 63, was seriously hurt, while the woman, also, 63, suffered severe burns. A second woman sustained minor injuries.

    Onlookers described seeing people jumping from the burning building in Green Lane, Illingworth, on Saturday.

    West Yorkshire Police said the cause was being investigated.

    A spokesperson for the force said a probe was being carried out alongside West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, Calderdale Council, the Health and Safety Executive and Northern Gas Networks.

    The area around the house, which has been reduced to rubble, has been made safe by the fire service, the force added.
