  5. 'Sad' end to Pride of York ferry - Hull MPpublished at 15:54 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2020

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A P&O ferry’s final voyage from Hull marks a “sad” end to the vessel, one of the city's MPs has said as he warns seafaring jobs and supply routes for coronavirus vaccines are under threat.

    Pride of York

East Hull Labour MP Karl Turner joined other well-wishers at Hull’s Alexandra Dock to bid “bon voyage” to the Pride of York yesterday.

The ferry, formerly known as the Norsea, began sailing between Hull and Rotterdam in 1987 before moving to the Zeebrugge route in 2003.

P&O Ferries announced in October it would close the route to the Belgian port due to a drop in demand because of coronavirus.

The MP said the vessel’s final berthing at the Zeebrugge port this morning followed the “dramatic decline” in maritime jobs in Hull.

He added its loss risked disrupting supplies of the new Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine, set to be made in Belgium.

Mr Turner said: "It’s a sad day as the Pride of York sails off from Hull to Rotterdam for the last time."

Unions say supermarket staff should not have to go in on 26 December as a thank you for their work during the pandemic

Leeds-based Asda, as well as Marks & Spencer, Pets at Home, and toy store The Entertainer have all said they will close.

But Morrisons said it would stay open to help customers and working on the day would be voluntary, with staff getting double pay.

A Morrisons spokeswoman said it would open its stores for a limited number of hours on Boxing Day but it was "working hard to ensure all colleagues get a meaningful break during the Christmas period".

It said anyone who worked on Boxing Day would also get time back in lieu.

  9. Covid hits response to growing Doncaster fly-tip problempublished at 14:14 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2020

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Fly-tipping across Doncaster is rising and the coronavirus pandemic has slowed down the ability to get it cleared up quickly, council bosses have said.

    Fly-tipping scene

Doncaster Council’s director of environment, Dan Swaine, says between July and September, there were 3,314 reports of fly-tipping across the borough - up from 2,950 in the previous three months.

The council’s 80% target of clearing fly-tipping within seven days of it being reported is down to about 61%, figures also show.

Mr Swaine says Doncaster's fly-tipping clearance teams are working hard to clear the dumping, but it has been made harder by the pandemic.

“In terms of deploying resources, we do try our best where we can but the reality there has been some impact in terms of people reporting Covid-19 symptoms,” Mr Swaine says.

"This isn’t a service you can do remotely. In some instances some of the dumped material doesn’t enable us to remove it as quickly as we’d like...and with some items it needs more people to move it."

New recruits are in the process of being hired to "react quicker" to reports, Mr Swaine adds.

A bust of Captain Sir Tom Moore - complete with medals and his trademark blazer - is being unveiled at St James’s Hospital in Leeds today:

The work will be displayed in the Bexley Wing, which has received some of the money raised by Sir Tom.
