One of the largest passenger ferries built in the UK has sailed from Hull for the final time.

The Pride of York, formerly known as the Norsea, began sailing between Hull and Rotterdam in 1987 before moving to the Zeebrugge route in 2003.

P&O Ferries announced in October it would close the route to the Belgian port due to a drop in demand because of coronavirus.

Former captain Russ Garbutt said: "She carried out a magnificent service."

Commenting after the ship left Hull's Alexandra Dock yesterday, Mr Garbutt said: "Any seafarer seeing one of their favourite ships leaving the port is obviously very saddened, especially having so many good memories."

Mr Garbutt, who served on the Pride of York for about five years, said she was the largest ship to be built in Govan, Glasgow, since the QE2.

The ferry is due to arrive in Zeebrugge at 08:45 local time this morning.

  8. 'People who don't want it are silly' - Covid jab recipientpublished at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2020

The first person to be given the new coronavirus vaccine at one East Yorkshire hospital has described people who don't want the Pfizer Covid-19 jab as "silly".

    Sheila Page gets jab

Sheila Page, 83, said of the experience at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham: "I couldn’t wait. People who don’t want it are silly.”

The first of 800,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine are being dispensed across the country in the coming weeks. Up to four million more are expected by the end of the month.

Dr Mike Tildesley, an expert in infectious disease, says it’s vital for people to take the vaccine when they’re offered it.

"We need to encourage as many people as possible to take the vaccine because the more people who do, the closer we get to minimising the number of people who get the disease."

  12. Illingworth explosion: Community fundraiser tops £5,000published at 16:20 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2020

A community fundraiser to help a family from West Yorkshire whose home was destroyed by an explosion has so far raised more than £5,000.

    Explosion aftermath

Onlookers described seeing people jumping from the burning building in Green Lane, Illingworth, near Halifax, on Saturday.

A man, 63, was seriously hurt while a woman, also, 63, sustained severe burns. A second woman was also injured.

Fundraisers say hundreds of people have offered support and sympathy since the blast.

Noah's Ark Centre, a Halifax-based charity which has helped to coordinate the fundraising, says it has received donations "ranging from £5 to £500".

Andrew Sykes, the charity's funding and development manager, says: "There is no property left, it has been completely destroyed, the family have lost everything.

"We don't know what their financial situation is, we don't know if they've got insurance or savings, but ultimately it's Christmas and people want to give."

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service says an investigation into the cause, which also involves the police, the council, Health and Safety Executive and Northern Gas Networks, is ongoing.

The new hires are expected to join an existing 450-strong team of customer care agents in the Hammonds of Hull building, upon completion of major refurbishing works, the firm says.

ResQ chief operations officer Gill Marchbank says: "We can safely say the past year has been somewhat lacking in positive news, even more so in Hull over the past month with the rise in Covid cases.

"Amid this difficult climate, it’s really rewarding to be in a position to create new opportunities for our local community through our partnership with Vodafone."

Hull councillor Daren Hale adds: "The news that ResQ are looking to take on over 100 people is particularly welcomed at this time.

"It also serves to demonstrate the commercial confidence in the city centre by a leading private sector employer."

The district’s oldest and most vulnerable people, along with front-line healthcare workers, will be first in the queue to receive the jab.

Speaking at a board meeting, the Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Group's chief operating officer Jo Webster said: "We are very much in a position in Wakefield next week to start making sure our vulnerable populations and our staff get access to this vaccine."

It is thought that the vaccine will initially be delivered at Pinderfields Hospital, though NHS England has not yet confirmed this.

Local GP surgeries are likely to become more directly involved as further waves of the jab are rolled out.

On Monday, it was revealed the Covid infection rate had fallen in Wakefield for the fourth week running. The latest data available suggests it now stands at about 172 people per 100,000.

If City of York Council doesn't step in, Make It York (MIY) and Visit York will shut down and leave "significant debts", the organisation has warned.

Senior councillors have been told the impact will be “severe” if the company fails and, as it is owned by City of York Council, creditors will ask the local authority to pay off outstanding debts.

MIY wants rent payments for its offices on Museum Street and Silver Street to be deferred, a loan of £300,000 if necessary, and a “letter of guarantee” from the council that it will have access to up to £1m.

A council report says: “MIY’s revenues have been decimated and, although the company’s board has reduced costs and cut all non-essential spend, these measures have not been sufficient to ensure the business’s commercial viability."

A possible bailout will be discussed at a council meeting next week.

Gary Fordham, 43, lost control after blacking out at the wheel and later found it was because of an undiagnosed brain tumour.

The van flipped on to its side and he was afterwards told people broke in to free 11-year-old Hayden and their dog, Buster.

    Firefighters later cut him free.

Mr Fordham had been driving back to his home in Bradford on 31 December after visiting his parents in Swindon for Christmas and he crashed on the M6 in north Staffordshire.

Hayden was able to find his father's mobile phone and used it to call for help.

"I woke up at 9pm on New Year's Eve 2018 in Royal Stoke University Hospital, with no idea where I was or what had happened," Mr Fordham said.

"I owe so much both to the members of the public who rescued Hayden and Buster and the emergency services who came to our aid."

He was diagnosed with the brain tumour when he was checked over at the hospital.

Officers from Barnsley have raised more than £2,000 for men’s charities by taking part in what's known as Movember.

Held in November, Movember sees men around the world grow a moustache and/or a beard to raise awareness of men’s health.

The money raised is given to charities which research and support those with testicular and prostate cancer, and those who are struggling with their mental health.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said the mustachioed Barnsley officers have "waxed them, styled them, brushed and oiled them, but most importantly they’ve grown them".

Insp Clive Collings said: "I'm extremely proud of the team for taking part and for persevering with the growing of a moustache, it’s not easy.

"They've raised a huge amount of money which will help fellow men in getting the care, support and treatment they need. Great work."
