    Bin collections in Leeds have been suspended, along with public buildings being closed, because of heavy snow overnight.

    Recycling centres, libraries and community hubs are closed due to the poor weather making travelling difficult, the council said.

    It added it wasn't sure when the bin collections would restart, but crews would try to collect missed bins over the next two days, prioritising black bins.

    Primary routes are continuing to be gritted, including near vaccination centres to allow appointments to continue, the council added.

    Would-be rail passengers are being told not to travel on the Calder Valley route until further notice after heavy snow led to "significant" disruption.

    Train operator Northern said fallen trees were blocking the line between Halifax and Rochdale, cancelling some services.

    Due to poor driving conditions on the road, rail replacement services were "extremely difficult" to run.

    The weather had led to disruption on other parts of the network, it added, including in North Yorkshire.

    A spokesperson for Northern said: “We are running rail replacement buses where possible, but in some areas road conditions are simply too treacherous. That’s why, until further notice, we’re asking our customers not to travel on the Calder Valley line between Halifax and Rochdale.

    “Customers who need to make essential journeys elsewhere on the network should allow extra time for travel and check before setting off. The poor weather is forecast to continue to several hours today and further disruption is possible on all routs across the north of England.”

    Bin collections in some parts of Yorkshire are being affected by heavy snow across the region.

    Rotherham Council, writing on social media, says, external: "There's going to be a bit of disruption today, due to the road conditions.

    "If your bin doesn't get emptied please leave it at the kerbside and the bin crews will get to you as soon as they can."

    Meanwhile Kirklees Council, external tweeted; "Due to the severe weather, we will struggle to collect some bins today."

    Hundreds of schools are closed in the region due to the weather and there are problems on many roads.

    The Woodhead Pass and the A628 at Holme Moss in West Yorkshire have been closed, Kirklees Council said.

    In North Yorkshire, coronavirus vaccinations in Harrogate and Ripon were being rescheduled.

    An amber "be prepared" weather warning for snow, external across parts of West and South Yorkshire is in place, external with a yellow "be aware" warning for snow and ice in North and East Yorkshire.

    The snow is causing problems for motorists in Sheffield - but it's a different matter for those with skis.

    Skier Peter Gilbert said the snow was a bit wet but due to coronavirus restrictions on travel it was the best opportunity he was going to get.

    More than 600 schools are closed in West Yorkshire due to heavy snow.

    Almost 150 schools are closed in the Leeds area and 200 in Bradford due to heavy snowfall.

    Meanwhile in Calderdale about 100 schools have been closed by the council, external due to adverse weather conditions. In Kirklees more than 100 schools are shut, external and in Wakefield snow has closed more than 70 schools., external

    Meanwhile snow has caused problems on the M62 near Huddersfield because of a jack-knifed lorry.

    First Bus said its services in Halifax, external were "currently suspended due to adverse weather conditions".

    It added that some other routes in West Yorkshire were operating on main roads only and advised passengers to allow extra time for their journeys.

    Arriva Buses said there were no services operating from its Dewsbury depot.

    Writing on social media the council said: "Please be assured teams have been working throughout the night and are still out there to respond to this current weather situation.

    "We are doing everything possible to try and keep the district moving on our priority routes."

    Parts of West Yorkshire's are waking up to heavy snow this morning causing problems on the roads.

    The westbound sections of the M62 had to be closed at Outlane at junction 23 earlier after a lorry jackknifed.

    First Buses say they're keeping to the main roads only at the moment in Bradford and Huddersfield with services not running in Halifax, external and disrupted in Leeds.

    The amber warning predicts heavy snow will lead to some disruption during the morning.

    The Met Office says: "Travel delays on roads are likely, stranding some vehicles and passengers."

    They also warn there is a "good chance' rural communities could become cut off and that power cuts are "likely".

    The Met Office has also issued a yellow "be aware" warning for snow and ice across parts of North and East Yorkshire, which could bring difficult travelling conditions "with possible delays on roads, stranding some vehicles and passengers, particularly on higher level routes."

    Meanwhile two flood warnings, external - meaning immediate action should be taken as flooding is expected - remain in place in Yorkshire.
