1. Acres of 'precious habitat' destroyed in moorland blazepublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 29 April 2021

A moorland fire which burned for three days caused "hundreds of thousands of pounds" of damage, the landowner has said.

More than 100 firefighters and a helicopter tackled the 2 sq-mile (5 sq-km) Marsden Moor blaze at its height.

Landowner The National Trust said it was assessing the loss of "precious habitat" destroyed by flames.

West Yorkshire Police have held voluntary interviews with a man and a woman in relation to the fire.

A file has been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service for a decision as to whether charges should be brought, a force spokesperson said.

  2. Starting HS2 in north 'would have been sensible' - Shappspublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 29 April 2021

Starting construction of the entire HS2 rail project from north to south would "probably have been sensible", according to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.

Work is already underway on the first phase of the high-speed rail project between London and Birmingham.

Phase 2a is planned to run from Birmingham to Crewe, and Phase 2b from Crewe to Manchester, and from Birmingham to Leeds.

The Government-commissioned Oakervee Review warned last year that the final bill for HS2 could reach £106 billion at 2019 prices.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Hilary Benn, Labour MP for Leeds Central, said: "Given that the National Infrastructure Bank is going to be based in Leeds, wouldn't it be highly symbolic to start building phase 2b of the eastern leg of HS2 from Leeds southwards?"

Mr Shapps replied: "It probably would have been sensible to start the entire project from the north-south in the first place.

"However, having looked at this in great detail - not least with the Oakervee Review - I also know chopping and changing those plans partway through is the most expensive possible outcome and doesn't work out."

Sir Edward told the Commons the "beautiful" Great North Road should be renamed after the Queen to celebrate her 75 years on the throne next year.

Speaking on Thursday he said: "The A1, the Great North Road, is a beautiful road linking Scotland and England - and I think, to honour the upcoming Jubilee, we should rename it the Queen's Highway, why not?"

However, he said the road was also in need of upgrading, saying the 410 mile-long (660km) route was "not an entirely safe road".

Responding to the proposal Transport minister Rachel Maclean said: "Well, I thank [Sir Edward] very much, and I fully agree with his suggestion for renaming this beautiful road as he sets out.

"And I am sure that the Transport Secretary, who is listening carefully, will take that away and consider it.

"But I am happy to say that we are investing significant sums in making the A1 safer and more reliable."

The Army veteran, originally from Keighley, won the nation's hearts by walking 100 laps of his garden during the first lockdown, raising almost £33m for NHS charities. He died on 2 February after contracting coronavirus.

North Yorkshire artist Andrian Melka began work on the 2m (6ft 6in) clay statue following the news of his death, and it is now almost ready to be cast in bronze and donated to Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

"I was really inspired by Captain Tom, not only for raising so much money for the NHS but also in encouraging others to put one foot in front of the other and remain optimistic during challenging times," Mr Melka said.

Mr Melka has been working with Leeds Hospitals Charity to identify a suitable home for the finished statue.

If the crowdfunding target is reached, it has been agreed it will be installed in a newly refurbished courtyard garden at Leeds Chapel Allerton Hospital.
