The South Yorkshire and West Midlands forces agreed the settlement earlier in 2021 following a civil claim.

Nobody has ever been convicted over police actions following the tragedy, in which 96 Liverpool fans died at the 1989 FA Cup semi-final.

Three men were acquitted of altering police statements in May.

A spokesman for Saunders Law, the lead solicitors for the group litigation, said the claim was started in 2015 and agreed in April.

But it could not be reported until the conclusion of the trial of former South Yorkshire Police Ch Supt Donald Denton, 83, retired Det Ch Insp Alan Foster, 74, and Peter Metcalf, 71, who acted as solicitor for the force.

The three men, who denied perverting the course of justice, went on trial at Preston Crown Court in April but Mr Justice William Davis later ruled they had no case to answer.

The RAF Aerobatic display team, which is based at RAF Scampton, is scheduled to perform at the Midlands Air Festival today and over the weekend.

The Covid-19 pandemic meant the squadron's airshows and events were cancelled last year.

The team say they've been working on some new moves and can't wait to get back flying in their first airshow since July 2019.

Red One, squadron leader Tom Bould, said: "We were so frustrated last year with the lack of displays and being able to perform and do what we do in front of the public.

"I think there'll be a little bit of nervous excitement this weekend when we actually get to do it again, but we can't wait to put that first public display on."

The party said Ms Conchie was withdrawing from the contest on health grounds.

Mr Gordon was elected to represent the Knottingley ward in the 2019 local elections, becoming the first Lib Dem member on Wakefield Council for eight years.

The election, due to take place on 1 July, was triggered after the previous MP Tracy Brabin had to stand down when she was elected as West Yorkshire's mayor.

Labour has selected Kim Leadbeater, sister of Jo Cox, who represented the seat before her murder by a right-wing extremist, as the party's candidate.

The Conservatives have selected Ryan Stephenson, a Leeds councillor, as their candidate.

The Yorkshire Party said local engineer Corey Robinson would contest the by-election for them.

Rugby league international Ross Peltier has been chosen as the Green Party's candidate.

Jayda Fransen, the former deputy leader of the far-right Britain First movement, has announced she will also be standing.

Former MP George Galloway, who was expelled from the Labour Party in 2003, has indicated he will stand as a candidate for his Workers Party of Britain.

The money, from the Safer Streets Fund, will pay for projects to crack down on crimes like burglary, vehicle theft and robbery, for example by increasing street lighting and CCTV.

In North Yorkshire, which was awarded nearly £430,000, the cash will be spent on helping protect homes and farms in parts of Selby near to the border with West, South and East Yorkshire by investing in Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras (pictured above).

According to North Yorkshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Philip Allott one in four crimes in Selby are burglaries compared to one in 10 in the rest of North Yorkshire.

It is thought major roads such as the A19, A1(M) and M62 provide easy access for criminals and ANPR cameras would deter and detect burglars.

Mr Allott (pictured), said: "The use of these cameras is particularly important given the impact they have spotting potential burglars before they can commit an offence.

"This will help protect not just the areas directly being supported by this Safer Streets Fund but more parts of North Yorkshire."

Former City of York Council leader and Lord Mayor, Steve Galloway, who started the petition, said the move would recognise all those who "went the extra mile" and whose efforts have "saved many lives".

The petition says: "In recognition of the work undertaken by professionals, key workers, and volunteers during the coronavirus pandemic in York, the City Council is asked to offer the Freedom of the City to NHS York.

"This is a simple way for the City of York to say thank you to the many people who have gone the extra mile during the very challenging circumstances of the last year."

The plans will be put to councillors at a full council meeting, who will then vote on whether the honour is given.
