Officers from South Yorkshire Police were called by a concerned member of the public to reports of the small pet being left on the back seat at Lakeside.

Although the window was left slightly open, police said it wasn't enough "to provide proper ventilation".

The gap was big enough for officers to reach in and open the door of the Land Rover, avoiding a broken window, Doncaster Central Neighbourhood Policing Team said.

The dog was checked over and deemed OK, but the driver and pet owner has been reported to the RSPCA who "will follow up the incident", officers added.
