Sylwester Cebula, of Mayfield Street, admitted dumping the fridge in Cranbourne Street in November 2018 after failing to pay a Hull City Council fine of £382.

He pleaded guilty in Hull Magistrates’ Court on 4 June, which heard council environment officers found no record of him requesting a bulky item collection prior to dumping the appliance.

Councillor Rosie Nicolae, the council's environmental services portfolio holder, said: "This successful prosecution demonstrates we do not take fly-tipping lightly.

"We encourage residents to always check with the Environment Agency before paying someone to dispose of their waste and ensure they are fully licensed."

  14. 'Concern' as children found unsafe in seat belt clampdownpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 17 June 2021

Police have expressed "deep concern" over drivers who fail to safely buckle up their children, as over 60 motorists were found without seat belts in one week in North Yorkshire.

In some of the cases, officers discovered children "not strapped in", the force said.

Sgt Tim Wilson, from North Yorkshire Police said: "Wearing a seatbelt has been a legal requirement for decades, so it’s incredible that we’ve encountered around 10 people a day who didn’t use one.

"Several of these cases involved children, which is deeply concerning and totally irresponsible."

One driver stopped for not wearing a seatbelt was arrested on suspicion of taking the vehicle without the owner’s consent, drug-driving and driving while disqualified.

Other stops showed vehicles to be untaxed, uninsured or unroadworthy, officers added.

Those who fail to wear a seatbelt are issued with a Traffic Offence Report. It carries a £100 fine which can rise to up to £500 if convicted by a court.

Pat Midgley, who served as a Labour councillor for 33 years, died in March 2020 after being admitted to the city's Northern General Hospital.

Pat Midgley Lane was unveiled at Park Hill flats on Wednesday, part of the area she represented.

Speaking at the unveiling, her daughter Joanna Midgley said: "It's amazing, we are so proud. She was very modest, but I know she would have secretly been proud too.

"We had so many emails when she died about the work she had done and how she touched people's lives," she said.

The former chief executive of Sheffield City Council, Sir Bob Kerslake, said: "Pat was always a kind person to everyone she worked with and it was that human kindness we remember.

"Whenever she pursued an issue it was never an attack on a person. She was passionately committed to this city and her ward and to those more disadvantaged," he said.

Pat Midgley was elected in 1987 for Nether Edge and represented the area for eight years before moving to Manor ward.

She was the first known serving politician in the UK to die with coronavirus.

  17. Gary Allen: 'Justice served' as double killer found guiltypublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 17 June 2021

"Justice has been served" as a man who murdered two women more than two decades apart has been found guilty of both their killings, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has said.

    Samantha ClassImage source, Humberside Police

Gary Allen, 47, of no fixed address, was charged with strangling Samantha Class (pictured above), 29, on the banks of the Humber Estuary in 1997.

He was tried and cleared of her murder in 2000 but the acquittal was quashed last year after he was charged with murdering Alena Grlakova, 38, in 2018.

Ms Grlakova's body was found in a stream in Rotherham in April 2019, four months after she was reported missing.

Following a seven-week trial at Sheffield Crown Court jurors have today convicted him of both killings.

Claire Lindley, Chief Crown Prosecutor of CPS Yorkshire and Humberside, said both the families of Samantha Class and Alena Grlakova "have now seen justice served".

She added: "From the evidence presented to the court, it is clear that Allen is a dangerous individual who presents an obvious and immediate danger to women.

"Allen lived out his horrifying and violent sexual fantasies through planned, premeditated and brutal assaults on these two vulnerable women.

"Their lives were cut cruelly short and their families are serving their own life sentences of grief. Our thoughts remain with them."

Allen is due to be sentenced on Wednesday 23 June.

  18. Gary Allen double murder inquiry 'biggest in years'published at 12:29 British Summer Time 17 June 2021

Gary Allen's conviction for the murder of Alena Grlakova in Rotherham in 2018 follows the "biggest investigation by South Yorkshire Police's Major Crime Unit in recent years", the force has said.

Ms Grlakova (pictured), 38, was last seen alive on Boxing Day 2018 and was reported missing to the force on 15 January 2019.

Her body was subsequently found in a stream called the Old Slaugh, on land just off Taylors Lane in Rotherham, in April 2019.

Allen, 47, of no fixed address, has today been found guilty of murdering Ms Grlakova as well as the murder of Samantha Class in East Yorkshire in 1997.

He was tried and cleared of the murder of Ms Class in 2000 but the acquittal was quashed last year after he was charged with murdering Ms Grlakova.

Following the verdicts, Det Ch Insp Oughton Mark Oughton, leading the South Yorkshire force's investigation, said: "Although today's conviction will hopefully bring Alena's family some closure, we know it will never bring her back. Alena was a mother of four children. A daughter, a sister and friend.

"At the time of her death, she was making plans to return to Slovakia to make a fresh start. Allen cruelly and violently took Alena's life from her just as she was making plans for a brighter future."Allen is due to be sentenced on Wednesday 23 June.

  20. Gary Allen case 'unlike any other' - Humberside Policepublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 17 June 2021

The case of Gary Allen, who has been found guilty at Sheffield Crown Court of two murders 21 years apart, was "unlike any other", according to Humberside Police.

    Gary AllenImage source, Humberside Police

Allen, 47, was charged with strangling Samantha Class, 29, whose body was found by three schoolchildren on the banks of the Humber Estuary in 1997.

He was tried and cleared of her murder in 2000 but the acquittal was quashed last year after he was charged with murdering Alena Grlakova, 38, in 2018.

Jurors at Sheffield Crown Court have today convicted him of both killings.

Det Ch Insp Christine Calvert, senior investigating officer from Humberside Police, said the force was "very pleased" at the guilty verdicts.

In a statement, she said she wanted to pay her respects to the family and friends of Samantha Class: "Samantha left behind young children when she had her life snatched from her and we should remember they have grown up without their mother and have waited a long time to see justice done.

"I hope this result can now begin the healing process properly and brings them some comfort."

Det Ch Insp Calvert added: "This case has been unlike any other in Humberside, in that it is our first ever double jeopardy case, but in that it is also one of the UK’s first where an undercover operation has provided the pivotal evidence to the case being reopened and retried.

"We are incredibly proud of all of the work that has gone into making this possible, so Samantha’s family could finally see justice.

“It is clear how dangerous Gary Allen is, particularly to women, which is why he is now exactly where he belongs, in prison."
