East Riding Public Health Director, Andy Kingdom

It follows government sources saying most current coronavirus rules will remain in place for another four weeks after the planned 21 June unlocking.

East Riding public health director Andy Kingdom says the Delta variant - known as B.1.617.2 - is spreading more quickly than the Kent or Alpha variant, which was behind a surge in cases over the winter.

Mr Kingdom told BBC Radio Humberside: "In terms of the tug of war between the virus and it's new really aggressive variant, verses us, our behaviour, the restrictions and vaccine, the tug of war is moving towards the variant and we need to keep the restrictions for a bit longer."

On Sunday Prime Minister Boris Johnson said a final decision on whether the reopening should be paused had not yet been taken.

The prime minister is expected to confirm today that the final easing of lockdown rules be postponed beyond 21 June.

On Sunday, the UK recorded 7,490 new cases of Covid-19 and eight deaths within 28 days of a positive test.

Thieves stole 23,500 litres of fuel from Watson Fuels on the Valley Road Industrial Estate in the early hours of 28 May, according to South Yorkshire Police.

PC Rebecca Kenyon, said: “We believe the offenders used industrial piping to siphon fuel out of a diesel tank and into their own storage containers on a vehicle.

“Whilst they were on site, they also allowed a significant amount of fuel to drain into a nearby river requiring a significant clean-up operation."

The South Yorkshire force is currently reviewing CCTV footage of the incident and says it's keen to trace two vehicles seen at the site: a large heavy goods vehicle with a white cab and blue curtained trailer and a small white lorry.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact police.

It comes as government sources say most current coronavirus rules will remain in place for another four weeks after the planned 21 June unlocking.

Senior ministers have signed off on the decision to delay the lifting of all legal restrictions on social contact.

Prof Mark Harris, of the University of Leeds, said: "I don't think we should be considering relaxing all of our restrictions at this critical stage in our response to the pandemic.

"My worry is that if we take all of the controls off we'll see a massive increase in the number of cases."

The prime minister is expected to confirm today that the final easing of lockdown rules be postponed beyond 21 June.
