    An appeal for witnesses, external has been launched after an 85-year-old car passenger died two months after the vehicle she was travelling in came off the road near Doncaster.

    A white Volkswagen hit street furniture in Littleworth Lane at the Junction with Great North Road in Rossington, just after 15:30 on 4 June, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    The driver of the Volkswagen, a 73-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries in the collision.

    The female passenger was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

    A police spokesperson said: "Since the incident, she suffered complications from her injuries and sadly died on 4 August."

    Police say they now want to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them.

    The westbound carriageway at Tadcaster is now open.

    The eastbound carriageway between the A659 Tadcaster West and the junction with the A659 Tadcaster East remains closed.

    North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said it was called to the scene at 07:24 BST and had five vehicles at the site.

    It has said no-one has been injured in the blaze. Nearby residents have been advised to keep their windows closed due to the smoke.

    Highways England, external says it expects normal traffic conditions to return between 12:00 and 12:15 BST.

    Life coach Kelly Williams is hoping to bring happiness to people across the UK as she drives from John O'Groats to Lands End this summer in her bright yellow van.

    Ms Williams sold her house in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, and bought her van, nicknamed Sol, to travel and sleep in as she embarks on her "Chat in the Park" tour.

    She puts leaflets out on park benches to encourage people to stop and have a chat in an effort to combat loneliness.

    Ms Williams said: "I nominate three people every night to spread some happiness by doing something kind and in theory we can spread this wave across the world."

    "I'm putting it out on social media which parks I'll be in and people can just come and meet me and we can just chat."

  4. Firefighters continue to tackle A64 crane firepublished at 09:17 British Summer Time 12 August 2021

    This is the latest from the scene of a mobile crane fire on the A64 at Tadcaster in North Yorkshire.

    About 25 firefighters are at the scene tackling the blaze on the on the eastbound carriageway on the York side of Tadcaster.

    The blaze has caused long tailbacks on both carriageways of the road.

    No-one has been injured in the incident.

    North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service says, external Tadcaster residents close to the A64 should keep windows closed due to smoke from the fire.

    Highways England, external now says the road is expected to reopen at about 09:30.

    Drivers are being asked to avoid the area if possible.

    Students wanting to study law or business at the University of Leeds are being offered £10,000 cash and free accommodation to defer their courses.

    Deputy Vice Chancellor Peter Jimack said the university was making the offer as some courses were full.

    He said the nature of teacher-assessed grades as opposed to exam-based grades had made it "harder to predict" the number of successful applicants.

    Prof Jimack told the BBC: "We've contacted students on a small number of programmes in two schools to let them know that we are going to make them an offer to defer to next year with an incentive of a cash payment of about £10,000 and our fee for their halls of residence in their first year being paid by the university.

    "We are not putting pressure on anybody to make that choice, it's an entirely free choice."

    He said any students who chose to defer until 2022 would be provided with online materials to help them prepare for their arrival next year.

    A industrial museum in Bradford has been forced to temporarily close due to a case of Covid-19.

    A statement on the museum's website says: "Due to a Covid case and the need for staff to self-isolate following NHS advice, Bradford Industrial Museum is unfortunately closed to the public.

    "We will reopen on 19 August."

    Councillor Sarah Ferriby, said: "When there is a case of Covid we have to follow national guidelines for the safety of staff and visitors, so we have had to close the museum.

    "We hope that people understand the situation."

    Moorside Mills was built in the late 1800s as a small worsted spinning mill.

    It was bought in 1970 by Bradford Council to display industrial artefacts including textile machinery, steam power and printing machinery.

    A lorry driver been jailed for two years after hitting a stationary police car seriously injuring two officers.

    Christopher Swain, 38, from St Peter’s Road, Stowmarket in Suffolk, ignored a lane closure before smashing into the back of the police car on the A1 on 25 November 2020, according to Lincolnshire Police.

    PC Christopher Windsor-Beck and PC Matt Brand were assisting a broken down lorry on the motorway at Colsterworth in Lincolnshire when Swain's lorry struck their vehicle.

    Their injuries included fractures to the spine, broken ribs and a broken collarbone.

    Swain pleaded guilty at Lincoln Crown Court on Tuesday to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and for being over the prescribed limit for cannabis.

    He was also disqualified from driving for four years and ordered to retake another driving test.

    Sgt Dan McCormack said: "The dangers of getting behind the wheel after using any drug are highlighted in this incident.

    "The driver’s reaction times were greatly impeded, and I have no doubt that this was the main contributing factor to this accident.

    He added: "PC Brand and PC Windsor-Beck are still recovering but have returned to work and are incredibly thankful for all the support they've received from their colleagues as well as the public."

    The swing bridge in Whitby is to be closed to cars and vans for a large part of each day until the end of the summer as part of an extended trial.

    The bridge has already been closed to vehicles on weekends and bank holidays, apart from for buses and emergency vehicles.

    The trial closure has been extended to seven days a week between 10:30 and 16:00, starting from Friday 20 August until Sunday 31 October, North Yorkshire County Council said.

    The trial, which is being paid for by a £400,000 grant from the government, is looking at the pedestrianisation of the area.

    North Yorkshire councillor Don Mackenzie said he had seen "great safety benefits" with the weekend and bank holiday closures, adding: "We believe it is necessary to trial weekday closures due to the increasing number of visitors expected throughout summer.

    “To direct visitors to the nearest available car park, especially when the bridge is closed, seven interactive messaging signs are in place."

    These bright pink bins are being installed across Lincoln in an effort to stop chewing gum making a mess of the city's streets.

    The bins containing discarded gum are collected and the box plus its contents are recycled into more gum bins, reusable coffee cups and shoes.

    Lincoln Business Improvement Group's Sarah Loftus said the waste made the area look dirty.

    She added: "It's just not pleasant for people, it costs a lot of money to clean off the streets, so this initiative will make the streets a lot cleaner."

    An image of a slipper-wearing woman has been released by police after a couple visiting York were assaulted in the city centre.

    The married couple were punched in the head by a woman at about 16:00 on Monday near the junction of Kings Street and Clifford Street, according to North Yorkshire Police.

    Officers believe the person pictured may have information about the attack.

    The annual event is always a special day for racegoers and this year's, following the course's closure to the public due to the pandemic, is no exception.

    I'm at the event and it's a total sell-out.

    There are no tickets available on the gate after 7,000 were sold before today.

    That’s a reduced capacity to normal to ease congestion and help racegoers feel safe.

    There are also lots of outlets to buy food and drinks to ease the queuing.

    Course managing director Sally Iggulden told me the fact that Ladies' Day is going ahead means a lot to the whole town - with pubs, restaurants and even hairdressers being fully booked today.

    She said although they have managed to race without spectators throughout the pandemic, sport without a crowd is no fun - and today will be the homecoming!

    Police released the image after a thief made five visits to the Sainsbury’s at Crystal Peaks on 19 July.

    Police believe tags were removed from the spirits and the bottles deposited in a waiting vehicle.

    Officers believe the man pictured could hold useful information about the incident and are appealing for anyone who recognises him to get in touch.
