Officers will be increasing visits in Ryedale after a number of reports of poaching at lakes in the Pickering area.

It is an offence to take or destroy, or attempt to do so, any fish in water which is private property, or in which there is a private right of fishery, say police.

PC Mark Atkinson, of North Yorkshire Police’s Rural Task Force, said: “The illegal taking of fish is not at all a victimless crime.

"It can have a serious impact on fisheries and fish stocks, and we often find that those responsible for poaching are also involved in other crime and anti-social behaviour."

Kevin Woodcock, North East regional enforcement manager for the Angling Trust said: “The theft of livestock shouldn’t be looked at as a case of ‘it’s only a fish’ – it has a knock-on effect on people’s jobs, businesses and the families of those connected to farming and the rural community in general.”

The pair agreed to dispose of the black bags from Patrington, East Yorkshire, at the official site in Withernsea.

But the refuse was dumped on the roadside at Hollym, about three miles away from the recycling site.

The man and woman were both ordered to pay £400 fixed penalty notices by East Riding of Yorkshire Council for fly-tipping.

The waste was found on September 24 and 25 last year on Crofts Lane and North Carr Dales Lane in the rural village.

During an investigation, a streetscene enforcement officer from the council found evidence relating to an address in Patrington.

The resident of the address in Patrington said they gave the household waste to the couple, who both later admitted fly-tipping.

The council said the fault was noticed at the weekend and the attraction closed as the glass could have fallen and struck someone standing below.

The bridge leading to the lighthouse was left raised to stop people from accessing the building.

A spokesman for Scarborough Council, which owns and operates the lighthouse, said: “A pane of glass in the lamp room came loose so as a precaution we closed the end of the pier off yesterday pending replacement of the pane.

“The replacement is happening today and once work is finished the area will be made accessible again.”

The lighthouse dates from 1806 but was rebuilt after it was damaged in the German bombardment of the town in 1914.

Liverpool recently lost the status because of over-development.

Councillors say high-quality restoration work is being carried out in Saltaire and they hope to attract more tourists to the village, which was created by Sir Titus Salt in the 19th Century.

Richard Shaw, who is leading Bradford's City of Culture 2025 bid, said: "It's an extraordinary street pattern of one of Britain's earliest model villages. The character is incredibly well preserved."

"The issue that faced Liverpool is very different to what we have in Saltaire and I don't think there's any anxiety that the village faces the same situation."
