  11. Crime commissioner reveals plans to tackle speedingpublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 10 September 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A police commissioner has unveiled plans to enlist academics to help redesign efforts to tackle speeding across England’s largest county.

Philip AllotImage source, North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner website

Philip Allott, who was elected to oversee North Yorkshire’s police and fire services in May, says he aims to enable the force to deal decisively with safety on rural roads and in villages, but with more than 6,000 miles of roads and 800 villages to cover, demand for enforcement is outstripping police resources.

It follows years of controversy surrounding North Yorkshire Police’s speed camera vans.

Earlier this year, Mr Allot said he had “big concerns” over the vans, which were introduced in North Yorkshire in 2011.

While fixed cameras have repeatedly been deemed an unsuitable solution for the largely rural county, the North Yorkshire force has insisted the vans are used to deter speeding at sites of accidents.

Julia Mulligan, Mr Allott’s predecessor, frequently defended the use of the vans and denied they were a revenue generator.

Mr Allott says universities have been invited to tender to review how speed limits are enforced in the county and he is hopeful work to come up with alternatives will shortly get under way.

The 87-year-old collected his pension money from the Post Office on Bridgegate in Rotherham before heading to the Admiral Casino on nearby Effingham Street.

South Yorkshire Police say they believe the pensioner was followed by an unknown man who pickpocketed the pensioner once inside.

Police believe the man pictured may have "vital" information about the incident.

PC Adam White said: “The victim in this incident was an elderly man who had just withdrawn his pension, we believe he was targeted because he was vulnerable.

“This could be your dad, or grandad – if you recognise the man in the CCTV images, or have any information about what happened, please do get in touch.”

  19. Sheffield protest over Roy 'Chubby' Brown performance banpublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 10 September 2021

A protest has been taken place outside Sheffield City Hall in support of Roy "Chubby" Brown after the comedian's upcoming performance was cancelled.

    Protesters outside Sheffield City Hall

Andrew Snelling, the chief executive of Sheffield City Trust which runs the venue, said the 76-year-old comic's material did not reflect its values.

Around 15 people gathered outside the concert hall on Friday morning, some wearing the comic's trademark patchwork suit and flying hat and goggles.

Haley Madden, whose online petition against the ban has attracted more than 35,000 signatures, said it was about "freedom of choice".

"They've made the wrong decision," she said.

"It's just not fair on the fans."

Another self-styled 'Chubette' Keith Butterworth said he did not know why the comedian had been cancelled after performing at the venue for the last 35 years.

"It's not just a protest about Roy Chubby Brown being here," said Mr Butterworth.

"It's about the council saying who can come and who cannot come. It's up to the public who they want to see, not the council."

Mr Snelling said the not-for-profit organisation, which runs multiple sporting and leisure sites on the council's behalf, would issue refunds.

He said he understood the decision would disappoint some but it was felt the show did not align with the trust's ambition to make its venues "inclusive for all", he added.
