St Aidan's has been chosen for its views across the wetlands towards the city. Located between Castleford and Leeds, it is home to what the RSPB describes as a “mosaic of habitats”.

Autumn usually sees thousands of wading birds stop at the reserve as part of their migration including species such as black tailed godwits and green sandpipers.

    BBC Radio York

Government plans to increase National Insurance contributions to pay towards trying to reform social care and invest more in the NHS are the "worst of all options", a North Yorkshire Labour MP has said.

    Rachael MaskellImage source, UK Parliament

Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central, has told BBC Radio York the government's proposals, announced by Boris Johnson on Tuesday, "will hit the poorest people the most".

The MP said: "Introducing something like a wealth tax would have been a solution, where those people proportionately who have got more, pay more."

MPs will vote later on the move, which breaks an election pledge made by the Prime Minister.

The government says the move will raise an extra £36bn in the first three years.

It says most of that money will be used to try to clear the backlog in the NHS caused by the coronavirus pandemic, but some of it will go into the social care system.

Labour and the Liberal Democrats say they will oppose the measures.
