Historic England says the empty floor space of these buildings is the equivalent to more than 100 football pitches and could be used for around 9,000 homes.

The organisation estimates more than 27,000 jobs could be created as well. Conditioning House in Bradford, (pictured) which is a former woolen mill, has recently been turned into apartments.

Lianna Francis-Kelly, who works on mill regeneration for Historic England, said: "There are lots of mills across West Yorkshire which have already been converted. They're being used for textiles, they've got table tennis in them, they're Tescos, hospitality venues, homes - and some are even used as hospitals."

Ms Francis-Kelly added: "If they're not used, there's a risk they deteriorate, some of them catch fire, they can be broken into - and the longer the mill is left in a poor condition the harder it is to convert them."

York is one of the worst affected cities in the country when it comes to flooding, with experts believing extreme weather events are becoming more common due to climate change.

Today's debate is co-hosted by Christian Aid and the University of York and is taking place in the Berrick Saul Building on the university campus.

It's called "Rise to the Moment - Yorkshire" and will discuss the upcoming COP26 summit in November on a local and national level.

It comes after Boris Johnson urged world leaders at the UN last night to take radical action to tackle climate change, insisting humanity has to "grow up."

Today's panel will include Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York, alongside key local leaders from the church, science and politics.

Also on the panel is Jen Morris from the Young Christian Climate Network, external who told BBC Radio York: "It's all very well us sitting here in a relatively well-off country telling people what needs to be done, but we're not stepping up to the plate in providing the funds for other countries to also mitigate, adapt and protect themselves."

  16. Decision due on 'Emmerdale' village housing developmentpublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Aisha Iqbal
    Political Reporter

More than 1,000 people have objected to plans for a major new housing and regeneration project in West Yorkshire’s real-life Emmerdale.

    The Woolpack

If approved, the plans would see 150 homes built in Esholt near Bradford, where the ITV soap was originally filmed.

Campaigners say the development, on a former water treatment works, would bring traffic chaos and put huge pressure on local services. There are also fears it would have a negative impact on the village’s attraction as a tourism spot for TV soap fans.

A petition calling for a section of the site to be used as a nature reserve, instead of housing, has more than 800 signatures, and hundreds more people have written objection letters.

Ruth Thompson, who lives in Esholt, is one of the organisers of the petition. She told BBC Radio Leeds: “This is not just about locals not wanting new housing near them. Such a large development would be very detrimental to Esholt.

"You really feel you are in a Dales village in the heart of the countryside and I think that feeling would be completely lost if a large modern housing estate was built."

Despite the objections, a 108-page report prepared for Bradford council's planning committee is recommending approval.

The report to the committee says: “There is no doubt that the economic benefits of the proposal are substantial. This proposed employment development has the opportunity to bring significant benefits to the Bradford economy.”

A decision is due to be made on Thursday afternoon.

  17. Could the Humber become a carbon shipping hub?published at 11:45 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Natalie Glanvill
    Reporter BBC Radio Humberside

A study is taking place to explore the potential for the Humber to import carbon dioxide.

    Humber International Terminal - Immingham

It will look at the feasibility of importing CO2 by ship to a terminal at Immingham and transporting shipments to permanent storage in depleted gas reservoirs under the southern North Sea.

The Port of Immingham, located on the south bank of the Humber Estuary, is the UK's largest port by tonnage and it's thought the plans could open up the Humber to attract shipments from western and northern Europe.

Henrik Pedersen, chief executive officer of Associated British Ports (ABP), says “ABP welcomes this important milestone in the UK’s journey to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050."

He added: "Our Port of Immingham will play a pioneering role in the future of hydrogen production, which has far-reaching potential for decarbonisation of the maritime industry worldwide, as well as wider industry.”
