    Diversions will be put in place as work starts tonight on a "large-scale resurfacing scheme" at a roundabout near the M62 motorway.

    A well as the roundabout at junction 34 near Eggborough, the slip roads from the A19 will also be resurfaced.

    The work will be carried out overnight between 20:00 and 06:00 until Friday.

    North Yorkshire councillor John McCartney said the works were "very welcome on this increasingly busy road".

    “Earlier this year we carried out some temporary repairs with the assurance we would return to do permanent works once the reconstruction of the A19 was complete," he said.

    “We are carrying out these works overnight to minimise disruption as much as possible.

    "Please familiarise yourself with the diversion and leave extra time for your journey.”

    The Mayor of South Yorkshire, Dan Jarvis, has announced he will not seek re-election to the post.

    Revealing his decision on Twitter, Mr Jarvis, who is also the Labour MP for Barnsley Central, said it had been an "extraordinary privilege" to have held the role but that he would be stepping down in May.

    He said: "Having led South Yorkshire for the past few years, and having put in place a devolved arrangement that has take us through he worst of the pandemic and is really starting to deliver for people in South Yorkshire, I think that now is the right time to think about who is best placed to build on these achievements."

    More than £16,000 has been raised for the surviving members of a family involved in a fatal accident last month on A64 in North Yorkshire.

    A five-year-old boy, nine-year-old girl and woman, 44, died in the incident at Flaxton.

    While surviving family members, a 48-year-old man and six-year-old boy, were recovering from serious injuries in hospital their home was burgled.

    A 49-year-old motorcyclist died in a crash in East Yorkshire on Sunday.

    A bike and a car collided on the A614 near Middleton-on-the-Wolds at around 16:30 BST.

    The male rider died and his passenger "sustained life-threatening injuries", police said.

    The driver of the car also suffered serious injuries.

    Humberside Police said: "Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends as they come to terms with their loss. They are being supported by specialist officers at this difficult time.

    "We are appealing for anyone who was driving in the area at the time that may have dashcam footage."

    A Sheffield secondary school has announced it will be closed today after three students were involved in an incident in which four people died.

    Outwood City Academy said with "great sadness" the school would not be open as usual for teaching.

    The closure comes after four people died at a house in Chandos Crescent in Killamarsh, near Sheffield, on Sunday.

    Police say a murder investigation has begun and a man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

    The school is open to offer support to any students who may be affected by the deaths.

    A school spokesperson added: "Our thoughts are with all those affected by this sad news. We are working with the police and are unable to give more information at this time."

    A 24-year-old man who was fatally stabbed in Sheffield city centre has been named by police.

    Mohamed Issa Koroma was attacked in High Street at about 16:30 BST on Friday and died a short time later in hospital, South Yorkshire Police say.

    A post-mortem examination showed he died as the result of a stab wound.

    James Lee, 31, of Doncaster Road in Rotherham, has since been charged with murder and possession of a bladed weapon in public.

    He is due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court later.

    Det Ch Insp Paul Murphy said: “My thoughts are with Mohamed’s family at this very difficult time. It's hard to fathom the impact this has had on them, his friends and the wider community who are coming to terms with what has happened."

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a nine-year-old boy died in a hit-and-run crash in West Yorkshire.

    An air ambulance and other emergency services attended but the boy died at the scene.

    A 49-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

    West Yorkshire Police said the man was in custody after going to a police station in North Yorkshire.

    The second pedestrian suffered minor injuries in the crash, near the road's junction with Knott Lane.

    Det Sgt Fiona Allan said: "This collision has happened right on the border of West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire.

    "We are keen to speak to anyone who has witnessed this collision or who believes they may have seen the van involved immediately prior to or following this incident."
