Harrogate Borough Council's preferred option is to build the new facility over a play area behind the existing pool saying the proposals will create a "21st Century facility".

But some residents have described the existing swimming pool site as the “best” and “only appropriate” location for the facility.

Concerns have also been raised over the loss of green space and up until now the council had not revealed exactly where the new leisure centre could be built at Fysche Field.

The Not On Fysche Field campaign says it has the support of around 940 people who are against the council's plans.

A planning application is expected to be made later this year. If approved the new facility could be built by the end of 2023.

People taking rubbish to one of the recycling sites in the East Riding now have to show a pass to prove they live in the area.

The passes have been introduced following a recent study which found nearly 20% of the rubbish being taken to the sites annually was being brought by people outside the area, especially Hull.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council says it's unfair that East Riding residents should be paying to process Hull's waste.

Councillor Chris Matthews says: "That equates to something like 12,000 tonnes of waste which we have to process and there's a cost to that. So in other words East Riding residents were paying for waste coming from outside our area."

  12. Labour shortage sees Yorkshire farmer kill pigletspublished at 09:16 British Summer Time 1 October 2021

    BBC Science and Environment

A Yorkshire farmer has killed hundreds of piglets because labour shortages in local abattoirs mean adult pigs are not being killed fast enough.

    Piglets on farm

The resulting backlog means there is less space left on farms for younger pigs, which are cheaper and easier to kill.

The farmer had been "destroyed by it", according to a friend.

"He had to kill perfectly healthy, viable piglets," she told BBC News.

According to the National Pig Association (NPA), this may well not be the only case of farmers killing healthy livestock as mature pigs have continued to "back up" on farms.

The labour shortages are being blamed on Brexit and the Covid pandemic.

    Leeds Town HallImage source, Google

The money for Leeds Town Hall will come from the National Lottery Heritage Fund which says the 19th Century structure has fallen into disrepair, because of environmental pollution and insensitive redecoration projects in the 1950s and 60s.

The work will include the full restoration of the façade pipes on the organ, and some of the original decorative features, such as wall sections, columns and entrance doors. It will take place during a planned closure of the building.

Leeds City council's Jonathan Pryor said the town hall was an "absolutely integral part of the city’s story and identity".

He added: "It’s hugely important that we protect and preserve this beautiful example of Victorian architecture for future generations."

  20. Delayed Bretton Hall hotel plans 'will go ahead'published at 16:26 British Summer Time 30 September 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

The developers behind a scheme to create a luxury hotel and leisure complex have promised it will go ahead - but will not be completed for up to two years because of Covid-related delays.

Bretton Hall, the Grade II listed former teacher training college next to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, is due to be converted into a five-star venue.

Developers Rushbond and hospitality firm Artfarm jointly formed the Bretton Investment Partnership, which received planning permission for the venture in May 2020.

Wakefield Council said in July the project had been delayed because of the pandemic.

However, the partnership has insisted the conversion will still happen and all parties involved are committed to the scheme.

A spokesman said: "The pandemic has had devastating impacts on the hospitality industry, though we all hope that the worst is behind us. The partners are committed to the project."

The developers said they wanted to start building work as “soon as possible” and hoped to have it completed within two years.

Wakefield Council leader Denise Jeffery said the delay would be 18 months to two years but she was confident the scheme would still go ahead.

“It will be a great asset to us,” she said. “The developer’s assured us, and I have seen evidence of this, that it will happen."

The original Bretton Hall building was built in the 18th Century, and later became a teaching college in the late 1940s. Education there ceased in 2007, when the University of Leeds relinquished its links with the hall.
