    A teenage cyclist has been freed from underneath a gritting lorry after a collision in York, police say.

    The rider received emergency treatment from paramedics while firefighters worked to rescue him, according to North Yorkshire Police.

    The incident happened at the junction of St Helen's Road and Tadcaster Road in the Dringhouses area at about 16:45 on Monday.

    The cyclist was taken to hospital with suspected serious lower body injuries, officers said.

    A spokesperson for the force said: "The gritter driver, from Selby, was not injured and is assisting police with their inquiries."

    Anyone who saw the incident, or who has dashcam footage from the area at the time of the collision, is asked to contact police.

    Two big headline acts have been announced for Scarborough's Open Air Theatre in summer next year.

    Music legend Sir Tom Jones will appear at the venue for the third time on Tuesday 26 July.

    Sir Tom has sold in excess of 100 million records during his career and he has won countless accolades including a BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music and a Silver Clef Award for Lifetime Achievement.

    He was knighted by the Queen in 2006.

    Meanwhile, the multi-award winning Manchester band Elbow will play Britain’s biggest outdoor concert arena on Saturday 9 July.

    Peter Taylor, from concert promoters Cuffe and Taylor, told BBC Radio York: "These two shows will make 13 shows at Scarborough next year and we're going to be adding more over the coming weeks and months. We're going to have a great season, it's much-needed for us all."

    Two males have been threatened with a knife and robbed of more than £100 in Dewsbury town centre, police have revealed.

    The two victims were told to empty their pockets by a male who approached them from a group of youths, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    The group also threatened the victims before taking £120 from them.

    The incident took place on Longcauseway just after midnight on Saturday 20 November, police said.

    PC Kathryn McGookin added: "The victims were unharmed in the incident, but were left shaken by what they had experienced."

    Anyone who witnessed the incident is being urged to contact police.

    Free sanitary products are being made available at Leeds railway station as part of a campaign against period poverty.

    Vending machines have been set up in the female and accessible toilets on the station concourse and platforms.

    Period poverty is when a person struggles to pay for sanitary products, which cost an average of £128 a year.

    A survey by Plan International UK in 2017 showed around one in seven girls can't afford the products.

    Maxine Joicey, from Network Rail, says: "We want everyone to feel welcome at Leeds station.

    "That's why we're providing free access to period products, which we hope will allow our passengers to travel by train or explore the city of Leeds with confidence."

    The driver of a car which crashed into a wall in North Yorkshire has died, police have confirmed.

    A green Ford Fiesta hit the wall, near Settle Golf Club, at about 21:15 on Friday.

    The 18-year-old male passenger died at the scene. The 20-year-old driver was taken to hospital for treatment but has since died, officers have said.

    Police have appealed again for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

    A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "We're particularly keen to hear from those with dashcam footage of the B6480 towards Settle at around 21:00."

    Armed robberies have taken place at the same shop in Leeds twice in the last three days, police say.

    Just before 06:00 this morning a male armed with a knife threatened staff before stealing cash and cigarettes from the Tesco Express, in Easterly Road, Gipton, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    A cordon is in place while an investigation into the robbery takes place.

    Anyone who saw what happened is being asked to contact police.

    The same shop had already been targeted by three armed robbers on Friday morning, officers added.

    Two further outbreaks of highly contagious bird flu have been confirmed in North Yorkshire, external.

    The H5N1 virus was found at premises near Thirsk, the seventh in the area, and at premises near Richmond.

    A 1.8-mile (3km) protection zone has been put in place around both premises and birds at the sites will be humanely culled, the government said.

    The two new outbreaks bring the total number of cases in England to 28, with 10 in North Yorkshire.

    The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone came into force across Great Britain on 3 November.

    It requires bird owners to follow strict biosecurity measures to limit the spread of the disease.

    It includes housing or netting all poultry and captive birds to keep them separate from wild birds.

    People who keep birds as pets or for racing, breeding or exhibitions are also required to follow the measures.

    The UK Health Security Agency has said avian influenza is primarily a disease of birds and the risk to the general public's health is very low.

    Dogs and their owners from across the UK have taken part in a Christmas-themed pageant in West Yorkshire, with the dogs being judged on their festive outfits.

    The theme for this year's Furbabies Pageant, in Collingham on Sunday, was Ebenezer Scrooge from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.The event's director, 65-year-old Philip Hodgkins from Leeds, told the PA news agency that people and their dogs had travelled from as far afield as Portsmouth to attend the event.He added that approximately 90 dogs had come along.

    "There are all different breeds, from Afghan hounds, right down to Chihuahuas.

    "We've got pugs, we've got Chihuahuas, we've got beagles, we've got Afghans, we've got springer spaniels, we've got whippets...we've got everything," he said.

    Mr Hodgkins and his team of volunteers organised the event, which was first held in 2019.The pageant sees dogs dressed according to the theme, with the outfits assessed by a team of judges.

    Charities in West Yorkshire say they're worried that more people will be sleeping on the streets this Christmas because of a shortage of places for rough sleepers to stay.

    Shelter, external says the Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact, with 91 families across the country becoming homeless each day after lockdown restrictions were lifted.

    Until recently, Kyle, who was 16-years-old when he started sleeping rough in Leeds, was living in a tent. He now has a roof over his head.

    Since the start of the pandemic, a total of 183,290 households have been tipped into homelessness.

    All this week, BBC Local Radio stations are focusing on the issue, as part of a Make a Difference campaign fronted by singer Katie Melua.

    Leeds indie band Yard Act have been named on BBC Radio 1's Sound of 2022 list, which tips new music for success in the coming year.

    Now in its 20th year, the Sound Of list has predicted success for the likes of Adele, Stormzy, Haim and George Ezra.

    This year's nominees were selected by a panel of 133 industry experts, including Elton John, Charli XCX, Ed Sheeran and former nominees Billie Eilish, Jorja Smith and Foals.

    Eight of the 10 nominees are female - including pop provocateur Baby Queen and quirky indie band Wet Leg.

    Yard Act (pictured bottom right) are joined by garage revivalist Pink Pantheress and John Lewis Christmas advert singer Lola Young. The two male acts include drill star Central Cee.

    Reacting on Twitter to the news, Yard Act said: "We didn't start this band to make critics' lists, but making this one is pretty sweet.

    "Cheers to everyone on the #soundof2022 panel who backed us to be on it."

    The winner will be announced in January on BBC News and BBC Radio 1.

    An appeal's been launched after a teenage boy was left in the street with a broken leg after being hit by a car in Leeds.

    The 13-year-old was crossing Foundry Lane, Seacroft, at about 17:15 on 24 November when a black car approached from the direction of the A64, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    A spokesperson for the force said: "The boy ran to the pavement but fell, leaving his leg trailing in the road. The car then drove over his leg causing a fracture."

    The vehicle involved in the incident, described as a "family-type" car, "increased its speed and drove off," officers added.

    Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has information about it, is being asked to contact police.

    Warehouse workers and drivers employed by supermarket giant Tesco in South Yorkshire are to stage a series of strikes in the coming weeks in a dispute over pay.

    The Unite union said members at Tesco's depot in Doncaster, as well as in Antrim, Belfast and Didcot, will take industrial action - over 1,000 workers in total.

    The union said the company had offered a 4% pay rise, describing it as "well below" the current retail price index inflation rate of 6%. The current consumer prices index is 4.2%.

    Tesco said its offer was one of the highest awards made within its distribution business in the last 25 years.

    Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "Our members have gone above and beyond the call of duty to keep Tesco's shelves filled throughout the pandemic.

    "At the very least the UK's largest and wealthiest retailer should be making our members a decent pay offer."

    Workers at the Doncaster site will strike for 48 hours from 06:00 on 16 December, followed by a further five-day stoppage from 20 December.

    More strikes are expected to be held at the site after Christmas.
