The water quality at the first stretch of river in England designated as a bathing site has been rated as "poor" in an assessment by the Environment Agency (EA).

    River Wharfe

The section of the the River Wharfe in Ilkley was designated a bathing site in 2020, meaning pollution levels are now regularly monitored.

Hundreds of people often swim in the river during spells of warm weather, with data released in August showing bacteria levels which regularly broke safety standards.

Ahead of the EA rating, Yorkshire Water announced plans to spend £13m on improvements to the stretch of the river.

The company said measures would include the "enhanced disinfection" of effluent discharged from treatment works in Grassington, Draughton and Beamsley to reduce the impact on water quality.

The EA's Martin Christmas said: "We're at the beginning of the journey at the site in Ilkley.

"We’re committed to working with the community, Yorkshire Water, local farmers, local authorities and other organisations to improve bathing water quality in the years to come."

The business's planning application for a new £150m terminal was approved by Leeds City Council on March 22, 2021.

But campaigners, as well as both Labour and Tory MPs, supported calls for a public inquiry.

On April 6, the then-communities secretary Robert Jenrick postponed making a decision on this request, giving no timescale, leaving the future of the plans in limbo.

However, a document seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service appears to confirm that the current secretary of state Michael Gove has chosen to set up a public inquiry into the decision.

The move has been welcomed by both MPs and campaigners.

Chris Foren, chairman of Group for Action on Leeds Bradford Airport, said: “We’re very pleased with Mr Gove’s decision.

It means that all of the consequences of LBA expansion will be properly considered by experienced planning experts.

“Airport expansion is obviously inconsistent with tackling the climate crisis."

A spokesperson for LBA said they were "disappointed" that the council's decision has been called in

They added: "Our proposals are robust and have the potential to boost the local economy at a time we need it most, generating more than 5,000 jobs and almost £500m to the local economy.

"If the government is serious about its levelling up plan, we cannot overlook this chance to turbocharge the recovery of the region."

The major investment will see the Swedish firm operate in the Humber port for the next 50 years and comes just months after it relocated its Rotterdam service to the area.

BBC Radio Humberside has been told the new development will allow for quicker sailing times and allow the use of larger vessels to increase capacity from across the region and the rest of the UK.

Niclas Martensson, chief executive officer of Stena Line said: "Our freight operation is at record levels and continuing to increase, so we want to build on this success and provide additional services."

A new, purpose-built terminal will now be constructed on a new site adjacent to Immingham Outer Harbour and it is hoped it will start operating in 2025.
