The pair became stuck at Rolston, between Mappleton and Hornsea, on Sunday afternoon and made an emergency call to the coastguard.

A crew from the Hornsea Inshore Rescue attended, with one member having to swim with life jackets before a boat picked them all up.

Coxswain Steve Hall told BBC Radio Humberside: "When you are cut off, particularly in January, you don't have many options because you're not going to survive long in the water and even a strong swimmer will be in trouble quickly.

"But if you do have a problem, make sure you call, even if you manage to get out because we'd rather go 100 times for nothing than miss a single incident and have something happen."

A full moon occurs when the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun and so its sunlit side is entirely visible from earth.

It's thought the January full moon is known as the Wolf Moon because wolves were more likely to be heard howling at this time.

  16. Landlord boom driving Bradford property pricespublished at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    Daragh Corcoran
    BBC Radio Leeds

Rising property prices in Bradford are partly being driven by investors from the south east looking for more house for their money, according to some of the city's estate agents.

    John Watts

Recent research from the Halifax Bank suggested Bradford was one of the places in the UK to see the highest growth in property prices in 2021.

The mortgage lender said UK prices rose at a faster rate last year than in any calendar year since 2004.

Property experts in Bradford told BBC Radio Leeds investors are finding the capital too expensive, and are choosing to buy in the north instead.

Mohammed Usman, who owns Bradford Estates, says he opened a branch in the capital to cope with demand.

He says there was a clear trend in 2021: "Most of our stock - anything below £150,000 - I would say 80% of it went to investors in the south east".

John Watts (pictured above) who owns Robert Watts estate agents, says prices have risen by up to 12% in Bradford in the last year.

Mr Watts added: "We've seen a lot of investors looking to buy in Bradford because it's more affordable, the yield is much higher.

"It has squeezed out the first time buyer."

  17. Smart motorways pause 'not enough' says police bosspublished at 15:21 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

South Yorkshire’s police and crime commissioner has said the government’s pledge to pause the roll out of all-lane running 'smart motorways' does not go far enough.

Dr Alan Billings has called for the scheme to be scrapped.

Smart motorways use the hard shoulder as an extra lane of traffic, but critics claim they have led to road deaths.

Ministers announced last week that they will immediately cease building any more smart motorways until five years’ worth of safety data is available.

The government's move comes after MPs said in November there was not enough safety and economic data to justify continuing this type of scheme.

Dr Billings said he often hears from members of the public about "how they feel anxious using these stretches of smart motorway".

He added: "If there is a collision and traffic comes to a halt, a smart motorway presents a huge challenge for recovery workers when there is no hard shoulder to drive along."

"I welcome the government’s decision to review the safety of smart motorways, but continue to urge them to abandon the scheme altogether."

According to government figures obtained by Panorama in 2020, 38 people were killed on smart motorways between 2014 and 2019.

  19. Delivery driver fined after fly-tipping phone bookspublished at 14:09 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2022

A man has been fined after dumping phone books by the side of a road in East Yorkshire instead of delivering them.

The books were found on the grass verge at Whins Lane, Long Riston, in November and the incident was reported to East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Following an investigation, a delivery driver from Hornsea, who had been paid to deliver the books, was found to have thrown them away and was given a £400 fine.

He claimed he didn't know what to do with the items he hadn't delivered and was worried about the weight of them in his car, the council said.

Paul Tripp, head of streetscene services at the council, said: "In this case, the person should have done what he was paid to do, or returned the remaining books, not dumped them at the roadside.

"We won’t tolerate fly-tipping in the East Riding and we need people’s help to prevent it from happening."
