A man acting suspiciously approached a car and spoke to its driver in the Harrogate Oval area at about 12:30 on Sunday.
As he moved away from the vehicle, a witness saw what's believed to have been a firearm tucked into the waistband of his trousers, officers said.
The man was wearing a blue face mask on his chin and is described as white, in his early 20s, about 5ft 10in, with acne-marked skin and short black hair.
He was wearing a navy T-shirt and an unzipped black mid-length coat and jeans.
Anyone who recognises the description, was in the area at the time, or who saw the incident is asked to contact police.
A 93-year-old man has died after the car he was a passenger in crashed into a tree in Lincolnshire, police have said.
The white Hyundai i10 Active hit a tree on Park Lane, Revesby, shortly after 12:00 on Sunday.
The man and the driver of the vehicle, a woman in her 60s, were airlifted to hospital, but the man died later that evening.
The woman remains in a serious condition, Lincolnshire Police said.
No other vehicles are thought to have been involved in the crash.
Officers are asking anyone who saw what happened, or who has dashcam footage which captured the vehicle before the incident, to contact them.

Work to create a Covid memorial woodland at a former golf course in Leeds has begun.
The 48-acre South Leeds Golf Course is set to become a country park which will include a People's Woodland, creating a space to remember loved ones who lost their lives during the pandemic, Leeds City Council said.
The project includes the creation of wildflower meadows and wetland habitats as well as the planting of planting more than 20,000 trees.
Councillor Salma Arif said: "We hope by creating this woodland it will provide people with a space to reflect, unwind and take in the peaceful surroundings."
Esther Wakeman, chief executive at Leeds Hospitals Charity, said: "We hope that The People’s Woodland will create a space where people from communities across Leeds can come together and support their local NHS hospitals."
Plans released last year for the work included activity zones and walking trails and cycle trails.
Work is expected to be complete at some point in the coming months.

Councillors in Sheffield will meet later to discuss Sue Gray's report after it named a leaving drinks event for chief executive Kate Josephs among lockdown gatherings being investigated by police.
Ms Josephs has previously apologised for attending the Cabinet Office gathering in December 2020.
The report, external by civil servant Sue Gray into allegations of rule-breaking in government named the event as one of 12 being investigated by Scotland Yard.
Ms Josephs is currently on paid leave from her ÂŁ190,000-a-year role at the authority, which she took up in January 2021.
She previously worked as director-general of the government's Covid Taskforce unit - which was responsible for drawing up restrictions.
Ms Gray's report identifies a Cabinet Office gathering on 17 December 2020 held "on the departure of a senior Cabinet Office official" as an event under investigation by police.
Ms Josephs said in a tweet last month, external that she "apologised unreservedly" for the event and the anger it would have caused among the people of Sheffield.
In a statement, Sheffield City Council's leader Terry Fox said: "The council's cross-party committee is due to meet later and will consider Sue Gray's update as part of their deliberations.
"We now need to let the committee, chaired by councillor Julie Grocutt, do its work," he added.

A Scania HGV crashed into the barrier on the A1(M) about half a mile from Wetherby Services on Friday, just before 22:30, according to North Yorkshire Police.
The crashed vehicle blocked the middle and outer lanes of the southbound carriageway until it was recovered at about 01:00.
A side test found the 25-year-old driver to be more than double the legal limit for alcohol.
The man was also charged with driving without due care and attention and is due to appear at Harrogate Magistrates’ Court on 17 February.

A charity which helps men tackle their mental health problems is opening two new sites in Hemsworth and Keighley.
Andy's Man Club , externaloriginally started in Halifax and has now grown beyond West Yorkshire and across the country.
Neil Waine, from Bradford, runs one of the branches and said: "It's needed in every town and city, if we can help men get problems off their chest then we'll keep getting bigger to help them.
"The pandemic has certainly had an effect, not just people who are depressed and suicidal, but also those who've been forced into social isolation. If we can open more doors so they can come in and have a brew and a chat and be among other people again than that's the real power of this."
