  1. Man arrested after police chase through Yorkshire Dalespublished at 11:23 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2022

    A man's been arrested after police chased a suspected stolen vehicle for almost three hours through the Yorkshire Dales.

    Officers began pursuing the car near to Skipton at about 09:00 on Wednesday.

    The chase involving a "number of near misses" and took police to Catterick, before the vehicle was stopped with a stinger at Swinithwaite, just outside Leyburn, at 11:30.

    The driver, a man in his 20s, ran off, but was later caught and arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking.

    He was also arrested for dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, drug driving and possession of drugs.

    The driver is currently being held in police custody.

    Insp Mark Gee, said: "I'm very grateful no members of the public were hurt, and for the co-operation and understanding of the local community while we brought this incident to a safe conclusion."

    More than £400,000 is going to be spent on upgrading and refreshing 12 stations along the Barton-on-Humber rail line.

    East Midlands Railway (EMR) says it will be installing electronic help points to help passengers access customer and emergency services as well as benches, signage and new grit bins.

    Fencing and shelters along the route will also be painted to improve the appearance of the stations.

    Gill Simpson, from Barton Cleethorpes Community Rail Partnership, says: "With the high growth of employment opportunities in North and North East Lincolnshire, this is just another excellent reason for people to come to live and work here, and enjoy all the things this area of the country has to offer.

    "The improvements also enhance the station experience for existing residents and casual visitors."

    EMR expects the work to be finished by late Spring.

    A 15-year-old girl was forced to run from a bus in Sheffield after a man sat next to her and performed an act of gross indecency, police say.

    The teenager was sitting at the back of the No. 76 bus between Shiregreen and Firth Park, when a man sat down and put his hands inside his trousers.

    The incident happened just after 15:00 on 14 December, officers said.

    A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: "When she went to get off the bus he did the same and behaved in an intimidating manner, so the girl got off the bus and ran away."

    An image has been released of a man police wish to speak to about the incident.

    Anyone who recognises the man pictured is asked to contact police.

  4. Motorcyclist, 46, dies in collision with tractorpublished at 09:24 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2022

    A motorcyclist has died in a collision with a tractor in Lincolnshire, police say.

    The collision at the junction of Raven Bank on the A16 Spalding Road, between Sutterton and Surfleet, happened at about 14:20 on Wednesday, according to Lincolnshire Police.

    The 46-year-old biker, who police have not yet named, died at the scene.

    No arrests have been made following the incident.

    The road was closed for several hours, but has since reopened.

    Anyone who saw the crash, or who has dashcam from the area at the time of the incident, is asked to contact police.

    A woman from North Yorkshire has said her energy bills have quadrupled as fuel prices spike.

    Sammy Lambert, who lives near Tadcaster, told BBC Radio York her monthly payments for gas and electric have gone from around £85 a month to almost £340 since the recent hike in energy prices as companies deal with the surge in wholesale costs.

    Ms Lambert said: "It's absolutely scandalous. It really is eating or heating for a lot of people."

    Householders will find out today how much their gas bills are likely to increase in the year ahead.

    Meanwhile shoppers have been hit by the highest price rises in nearly 10 years after shop inflation almost doubled over the past month.

    Joanne Scott, chair of Selby Big Local which runs Selby Community Fridge, said they have definitely seen a fall in donations, while demand has dramatically increased.

    Ms Scott said: "We used to get roughly 80 people a week through the door each week. What we're finding now is there's so many more people coming. We can have 20 to 25 people come in every day."

    Chancellor Rishi Sunak has said he "understands people's anxiety about rising prices" and insisted he will "always be listening" to concerns.

    He has previously pointed to a living wage rise and the winter fuel payment as ways the government is helping people.

    A man is due to appear in court later charged with arson after a fire engulfed a primary school.

    The blaze at Ash Green Primary School in Halifax broke out at about 19:50 GMT on Tuesday.

    Aaron Foster, 19, of Mixenden, Halifax, has also been charged with burglary and was remanded in custody to appear at Bradford Magistrates' Court.

    The fire caused extensive damage with the school being closed and not due to re-open until after February half term.

    The West Yorkshire city joins seven other locations on the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport's shortlist.

    Shanaz Gulzar, chair of Bradford 2025, said it was a "defining moment" and it was "very much by Bradford and of Bradford".

    Young people in particular, and groups from across the district, had contributed, said the bid organisers.

    Ms Gulzar said: "We can't say too much at this stage as we want to keep our bid full of surprise for the judges and our citizens."

    Organisers have said it was the "youngest" city in Europe - with 29% of the population aged under 20 and almost 25% under 16, and is also one of the most diverse in the UK.

    A number of roads in the city were closed for several hours while police dealt with the incident.

    Officers had earlier been called at about 05:00 this morning to reports of a "domestic-related" incident at an address in Chapeltown, Leeds.

    A suspect was identified and was subsequently traced to New Line in Greengates, Bradford, but when police went to the property, the man barricaded himself in.

    He was "safely removed" from there at about 15:00 after a fire had been started, and he remains in custody, according to West Yorkshire Police.
