Ambulance waiting times outside York and Scarborough hospitals have rocketed as the health system buckles under "extreme pressure", NHS leaders have been told.
Ambulance crews had to wait more than an hour on 675 occasions before seriously-ill patients could be passed into the care of medics in December 2021, up from just 44 times in December 2020.
Consultant cardiologist Steven Holmberg told directors of the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust an increase in ambulance handover delays last month was "extraordinary – completely unprecedented".
Waiting times for cancer treatment and diagnostics are also under "extreme pressure," Mr Holmberg said.
Wendy Scott, the trust’s Chief Operating Officer, said Covid was hitting hospital capacity, staffing numbers, and the ability to discharge patients back into the community.
York Hospital had four Covid positive wards as of last month, with three Covid positive areas at Scarborough Hospital and almost 1,000 staff across the trust off sick as of January 11.

Teachers at a private school in Sheffield are going to strike for the first time in almost 150 years following a dispute about pensions.
Sheffield Girls' High School teachers opposing plans to withdraw from the Teachers’ Pension Scheme are said to have shown overwhelming support for industrial action following a trade union ballot.
The school is part of the Girls’ Day School Trust group of independent schools and it’s set to be the first strike in the trust’s 149-year history.
The National Education Union says staff would be at least 20% worse off on average with the annual amount they receive in pension payments.
The union says 95% of its teacher members voted in favour of strike action, on a turnout of 84% in a ballot covering all 23 independent schools in the trust.
The trust will make a final decision at the end of February and urged the union not to call for strike action before then.
Potential strike dates are still to be decided.
