As some families break for school holidays, Doncaster Sheffield Airport managing director Chris Harcombe says the airport has seen an increase in passengers heading away.

"We expect about 10,000 passengers departing in the next few days. It's really great to see travel kick in in the new year," he says.

The coronavirus pandemic has led to most people being unable to go on foreign holidays, and those who have gone away have faced rigorous testing or quarantining requirements.

However, with restrictions being eased in the UK and across the world, Mr Harcombe says the airport hopes for "a strong summer".

"I think we are seeing two years of pent-up demand. We think by the summer we'll be in a great place with people returning, so we'll see a mix of people who are tentative and others who can't wait to get going."

Despite a challenging period throughout the pandemic, Mr Harcome says staff are "optimistic" about the future.

"What we've got is record seats on sale. We're expecting 1.4 million to 1.5 million passengers through the terminal, and more the following year."

Karen Dawber, who leads the Bradford district and Craven vaccination programme, says: "Being able to attend large events like this is one of the benefits of getting the protection we need against the potentially life-threatening symptoms of Covid-19.

“You don’t have to be a football fan to go to the clinic. The clinic is open to everybody and anybody who is eligible for the vaccination.

"Whatever the reason, we urge people to be on the ball and grab a jab this weekend."
