  1. Injured seal pup hauls himself to Spurn wildlife centrepublished at 14:02 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2022

    A grey seal pup managed to haul himself from the water and up to the front of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's visitor centre at Spurn Point.

    Police called the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) to help the seal - nicknamed Comet - after its journey on Sunday.

    Bethan Clyne from the charity said Comet had a couple of injuries to his hind flippers and was underweight.

    He was taken to a seal care unit run by marine medic Em Mayman, where his wounds will be treated and he can put on weight.

    The unit is funded by donations, external, which led to a call for help to pay "a few fish" for Comet's care.

    A man has been seriously hurt after being shot while driving a Lamborghini through Sheffield in the early hours.

    The 20-year-old was targeted as he drove on Ecclesall Road at about 01:40 GMT, South Yorkshire Police said.

    He then drove towards Whirlowdale Road in Millhouses, where he got into a white Rolls Royce with two people inside and they drove to Sheffield Rugby Club.

    Police were called and the victim was taken to hospital for treatment. The area has been cordoned off while police investigate.

    Shareholders in a North Yorkshire village pub, including the chancellor and local MP Rishi Sunak, are celebrating after a 12-year campaign to save their local.

    The Travellers Rest in Skeeby

    The Travellers Rest, external in Skeeby, near Richmond, has been closed for more than a decade and under threat of being converted to housing.

    But the local community put an asset of community order on the property and made it very clear that they wanted to save the pub .

    So far they have raised £200,000 by selling shares in it.

    Carol Wilkinson, chair of the Skeeby Community Pub, said: "We approached Rishi to see whether he would be interested in supporting the project, so we're delighted that he is a shareholder.

    "He came down and looks forward to claiming his free pint which all shareholders are entitled to."

    Ms Wilkinson also said shares in the pub are still available as they still need to raise around £60,000 to reach their objective.

    It is hoped the pub will be back in business within a year.

    A 21-gun salute will be fired in York's Museum Gardens at lunchtime in honour of the Queen's accession to the throne.

    The Queen marked the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne on Sunday, however royal gun salutes are not fired on a Sunday.

    The salute will be carried out by the 4th Infantry Brigade.

    The British Army Band, based at Catterick, will meet in Duncombe Place before marching through the city to reach the Museum Gardens in time for the firing of the guns.

    Gun salutes are fired in royal parks and at locations across the UK to mark events such as a royal birth, the anniversary of the Queen's coronation and accession and the birthdays of senior members of the royal family.

    A giant sculpture of the moon has gone on display at Lincoln Cathedral.

    The Museum of the Moon (pictured above at Rievaulx Abbey) has a 23ft (7m) diameter and uses detailed NASA imagery to replicate the lunar surface.

    The touring artwork by celebrated artist Luke Jerram has been shown around the world and will be at the cathedral until 27 February., external

    The Dean of Lincoln, the Very Revd Christine Wilson, said “We are delighted to host the moon at the Cathedral.

    "The artwork will look awesome with the Cathedral as its backdrop, and we are pleased to offer something really exciting for visitors to see and feel inspired by during the gloomy winter months, and as we all begin to return to normal life."

    Katie Summerhayes has narrowly missed out on a place in the Winter Olympics women's freeski big air final in Beijing.

    The Sheffield-born skier agonisingly finished 13th on 136.50, with the top 12 advancing to Tuesday's final.

    Teammate Laura Muir 17, will advance to the next round however after finishing seventh with a score of 157.50.

    Fellow South Yorkshire skier James Woods also failed to qualify for the finals in the men's freeski big air.
