    Tributes have been paid to former Notts County chairman Derek Pavis who was laid to rest earlier this afternoon.

    During his 13 years in charge, Pavis - who died last month following an illness - appointed both Neil Warnock and Sam Allardyce to the Meadow Lane dugout.

    Under Warnock, the Magpies achieved successive promotions to reach the old Division One in 1991.

    Earlier, fans waited to see Mr Pavis' funeral cortege passed through Meadow Lane.

    A woman, aged 21, arrested on suspicion of the murder of a 66-year-old man, has been released pending further investigation, say police.

    Anthony White died on Monday at Kings Mill Hospital.

    Emergency services had been called out to his home on Long Meadow, Mansfield Woodhouse, following reports of an incident there.

    Nottinghamshire Police say they believe his death was an isolated incident and that they are not looking for anyone else.

    A referendum is being held, external to ask people in Chesterfield whether they want the town to become part of the Sheffield City Region.

    The move would see responsibility for key services being handed to a Sheffield City Region mayor.

    The non-legally-binding postal vote has been organised by Derbyshire County Council and ballot papers will be posted out later this month.

    Council leader Barry Lewis said: "It's time to put this issue to bed once and for all.

    "This is a massive decision for the future of Chesterfield and the rest of Derbyshire and many people have already said they do not want the borough to join Sheffield.

    "We would rather not have to spend tax-payers' money on holding a referendum but local people deserve the chance to have their say in an officially recognised way."

    A mother has been jailed after drugs were found in her kitchen cupboard during a police raid along with a loaded pistol wrapped in a tea towel, external.

    The discovery came hours after police seized drugs and a Skorpion sub-machine gun from the front seat of a male friend.

    Police said the drugs from both locations, which included heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine, had a street value of £24,000.

    Remmay Wiliams, 24, of Blount Road, Leicester, received a six-year sentence for the firearms offences and a two-year-sentence for drug offences after being found guilty by a jury, police said.

    James Orme, 29, of Station Road, Countesthorpe, received a nine-year-sentence last year after pleading guilty to firearms and drugs offences.

    A 96-year-old man who killed his wife has been given a suspended sentence.

    Jack Tindall, strangled Ernestine Tindall at their home in Perlethorpe near Ollerton in August last year.

    Tindall had pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

    His wife had vascular dementia and had begged him to help her die.

    Nottingham Crown Court heard the couple had been happily married for 68 years and were "devoted to one another".

  11. Fire closes Pride Park sports complexpublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 9 June 2017

    A sports complex in Derby has been closed after a major fire in the early hours of this morning.

    The fire service said crews managed to contain the blaze, which broke out at Oxygen Freejumping Centre in Pride Park shortly before 02:15 but smoke had caused damage to other parts of the complex, including DW Sports Fitness, JJB Soccerdome and the Intersport shop.

    BBC Radio Derby reporter Wesley Mallin said staff from the complex were sitting outside the main entrance on Friday afternoon to explain the situation to customers.

    Signs had also been put up saying the building will be closed "for the forseeable future".

    The fire service has started a joint investigation with Derbyshire Police.

    Two people have been treated and discharged from hospital for minor injuries.

    A man, 20, from London, has been arrested for failing to stop for a police officer and theft of a car.

    An 89-year-old woman was left with a badly injured face, external after confronting an intruder who broke in to her home in Newark.

    Police said the man is thought to have entered her house in The Platts by climbing through a window at about 04:30 on Thursday.

    The woman was injured as she tried to stop the thief, who was about 6ft tall and wearing dark khaki clothing and a hat, from getting away.

    Former BBC Radio Leicester presenters Tony and Julie Wadsworth, who were each jailed earlier for five years for indecently assaulting under-age boys, will also be on the sex offenders register for life.

    Sentencing the pair, judge Andrew Lockhart QC, said: "This case demonstrates the danger of conduct such as this.

    "I have no doubt that some of the young boys have found themselves carrying some form of burden into adulthood.

    "This is grave offending against boys, some of whom were very young - I have come to a view that all were damaged by their experience."

    In mitigation for Tony Wadsworth, lawyer Michelle Clarke, told the court that the hardest thing about a jail sentence would be being separated from Julie.

    "Your Honour heard from him that radio in effect was his life and he was working up to six days a week," she said.
