  1. Topsy turvy election in the East Midlandspublished at 05:40 British Summer Time 9 June 2017

    John Hess
East Midlands Today general election reporter

Well it's bonkers, really and totally unexpected. I've never seen a night like it.

The big story in the East Midlands is Mansfield - the town has its first ever Conservative MP. Labour has held that seat since 1923 but now Ben Bradley - a man who wasn't even born when Sir Alan Meale was first elected - is the representative.

Elsewhere, Labour also lost in North East Derbyshire and Ashfield could yet be a Tory scalp.

But there were Labour cheers with Derby North where Chris Williamson took the seat off Amanda Solloway - he's keen a ally of Jeremy Corbyn.

And High Peak also changed hands with Labour's Ruth George overhauling Andrew Bingham's 5,000 vote majority.

It's been in Labour's hands for 94 years - until today.

The Conservatives have taken Mansfield for the first time, overturning decades of history in the former mining town.

Their successful candidate Ben Bradley wasn't even born when Sir Alan Meale first won the seat in 1987.

However, he pulled in 23,392 votes, ahead of Sir Alan's 22,335.

UKIP's Sid Pepper's vote collapsed from 11,850 to just 2,654 this time around, while independent Philip Shields got 1,079 votes and Liberal Democrat Anita Prabhakar received 697 votes.
