  15. Underground tunnel 'ineffective' during floodingpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 31 August 2018

    Kit Sandeman
    Local Democracy Reporter

A full investigation into the causes of flash flooding, which devastated homes and business in Sutton-on-Trent earlier this year, has been released.

In June, 32 homes and business were hit by flooding after torrential rain.

The flooding affected several areas of the small village, including Grassthorpe Road, Crow Park Avenue, Bulham Lane and the Old Great North Road.

The report said a tunnel for water under a road was being used for storage at the time of the flood and was therefore ineffective. The council said while it might have reduced the depth of the flooding, it also may have shifted the problem elsewhere.

    CulvertImage source, Nottinghamshire County Council

The culvert is owned by the county council, and has been rented out to the current owner.

The report said: "The culvert was initially installed as a cattle creep and not as a drainage structure and as such utilising it as a storage facility is legitimate.

"It is acknowledged that had the culvert been left open the flood depths in this event would likely have been shallower however it must also be acknowledged that if the culvert had been left open it may allow flood water to enter the hammerhead from the other side of the Great North Road."
