Fraudsters conned a person in Derby out of nearly £8,000 by using special equipment to disguise their number as one used by Derbyshire Police, external.

The caller pretended to be an officer and told the victim he faced arrest if an unpaid tax bill wasn't paid immediately.

Derbyshire Police said the number that appeared on the victim's phone was 0345 123 33 33 – an old non-emergency number that can still be used to report a crime.

    Phone

Derbyshire Police’s fraud protection officer, Tammy Barnes, said: “This is a worrying development in a long-running national scam and something that we as a force are taking very seriously.

“This victim handed over nearly £8,000 and it could have been much worse had it not been for bank staff realising that something was amiss.

“The spoofing of phone numbers, where the number that fraudsters are ringing from is disguised as a legitimate number, is particularly devious."

    Gavin Bevis
    BBC News

Derby North MP Chris Williamson has accused Frank Field of "making excuses" after the veteran member quit Labour's parliamentary group over the anti-Semitism row.

The Birkenhead MP said the party's leadership had become "a force for anti-Semitism in British politics".

He also said there was a culture of "intolerance, nastiness and intimidation" in the party under Jeremy Corbyn.

    Chris Williamson

Mr Williamson dismissed Mr Field's concerns, telling BBC Radio Derby: "He's obviously lost the confidence of his members and he's now getting his excuses in, it seems to me, and throwing around grotesque slurs which have no basis in reality.

"That's a very regrettable end, I think, to Frank's long career."

Mr Field told BBC Breakfast he would spend the "next few days" deciding whether to stand down as an MP to trigger a by-election, in which he would stand against an official Labour candidate.

  18. Businesses back plans to replace former pubpublished at 10:30 British Summer Time 31 August 2018

    BBC Radio Leicester

Several business owners in Coalville are backing calls for one of the town's oldest buildings to be knocked down and replaced with a supermarket.

The Red House Pub has been closed for over six months and now the Co-Op want to build a store on the site.

    The Red House Pub

The Heritage Society is fighting to save it claiming it's part of the town's history but others consider it an eye-sore.

Ryan Flampson, who owns One Stop Shoe Repairs told the BBC: "Obviously if they can save part of the building and develop it into the new structure fantastic but if not it's got to go. It can't be left like that.

"The whole high street needs this support, the people that own the properties around it need more facilities."

    Quote Message

Every decision related to new or refurbished sites is always taken with the best interests of the local community in mind, but we are also always happy to listen to any direct concerns raised about plans from local residents. Our proposals for a new convenience store in Coalville would represent a major investment by the Society and would provide local employment as well as a valuable retail resource for residents."
