Two intensive care units at the new Leicester Children's Hospital will be named after former Leicester City chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha when they open.

The charity behind the appeal to build the new hospital confirmed the tribute to Mr Vichai, who donated £2m to them after the Foxes won the Premier League in 2016.

Mr Vichai died in a helicopter crash at the King Power Stadium last October along with two pilots and two members of his staff.

His son, Apichet Srivaddhanaprabha, said it was a "proud moment" for the family.

"My father always supported Leicester’s communities because he believed in giving back to the people that have given so much to us," he said.

"His donations to Leicester Hospitals were about supporting the future generations of those communities and making sure there would always be help available to families that needed it most."

A special sergeant has been jailed for defrauding the police and prison service out of thousands of pounds and stealing police uniform.

Jack Denny was found to have falsely claimed for expenses and overtime from both Leicestershire Police and the Prison Service where he worked, the force said.

The 22-year-old, of Highgrove Close, Burbage, Leicestershire, was suspended from the prison service after an internal investigation. Information was passed to the police where he was also suspended.

Det Con Michael Buckey said: “Denny thought he would be able to get away with making fraudulent claims for overtime and expenses by adding small amounts on here and there."

An inspection over the weekend found it will be "four to six weeks" before the surface is playable again.

Southwell Town Council said it is aware and has spoken to Nottinghamshire Police.

Some people might use an old biscuit tin to store the odd bit of change or money for a rainy day, but one Nottinghamshire couple could be planning something more ambitious after finding out their old tub could be worth £1,500.

The anonymous retirees took their Huntley & Palmers biscuit box - which was made in 1929 - to a free antique valuation in East Bridgford to find out about its history.

They were stunned to learn it's a rare collectors' item, and it'll be up for grabs for hungry collectors when Hansons Auctioneers host their next toy auction.

  13. Council ordered to pay nearly £5k after girl misses schoolpublished at 11:07 British Summer Time 21 October 2019

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

Leicestershire County Council has been ordered to pay almost £5,000 because a girl missed more than a year of education due to its failings.

The primary school pupil didn't attend classes between March and June in 2017 and from September 2018 to May 2019, during which time her mother said the authority failed to provide alternative provision.

The mother lodged a complaint with the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman, saying the council failed to offer or identify "appropriate education" for her daughter, who has autism and additional needs.

Its investigator found the council was at fault for failing to offer or identify appropriate education for the girl.

A council spokesman said it takes complaints to the ombudsman "very seriously", adding it has acted on the recommendations "to ensure similar incidents do not arise".
