Lifesaving throw-lines are set to be installed in shops and pubs along the banks of the River Trent.
The equipment is made up of 25m (82ft) of floating ropes in a bag.
They were designed by paramedic Duncan McCondach following the death of Owen Jenkins.
The 12-year-old drowned in Beeston in 2017 while trying to rescue a girl from the weir.
Mr McCondach said: "We just don't want to see another tragedy like Owen again."
Students from Owen's former school have been helping to make containers for the throw-lines to be installed in.
They've also been learning how to use them, with the support of Owen's mother Nicola Jenkins.
She said: "It was really important to me to keep children talking about Owen but also to be more aware about water safety."
The 40 new throw-lines, funded by donations, should be available from the spring.
