"I told work four kids were all showing flu-like symptoms and they told me to get a test and stay off until I had my results which never actually came," he said.

"I decided to just book myself a test as I figured if I was OK they would be OK, and to be honest we did just suspect the common cold."

He said he had gone back to work after finding he was unable to book another test, which he had only intended to take as a precaution after his children became ill.

"I can't book another test anyway, so I've no choice but to carry on as normal," he added.

A Derby doctor has been advised to make a round-trip of more than 120 miles to Oldham for a Covid-19 test.

The medic, who works at Royal Derby Hospital and did not want to be named, was advised the drive-through test site in Royton was the "nearest" drive-through unit with an available slot.

Their employer, the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, said its in-house Covid testing capacity was focused on patient testing.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said the UK was aiming to increase test capacity to 500,000 a day by the end of October.

  14. Hancock's 'disgusting' school comments anger teacherpublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 9 September 2020

    PA Media

An assistant head teacher at a Leicestershire primary school has described the health secretary's criticism of a school that sent an entire year group for testing as "disgusting".

Matt Hancock cited the unnamed school as an example of "inappropriate" use of the testing system that was making it harder for people who needed tests to get one.

The teacher said her school had already had six members of staff forced to stay at home due to a lack of available testing, out of a total of about 45 - a loss which makes a "huge difference" to their teaching provision.

"The government had months to consider how the return of schools might affect testing capacity and yet nothing has been done about it," she said.

"Teachers and children, alongside NHS staff and carers, need to be given testing priority."

    Hugh Casswell
    Political reporter, BBC Radio Nottingham

Controversial plans to scrap district and borough councils in Nottinghamshire in favour of a so-called "super-council" are back on the agenda.

Nottinghamshire County Council will revisit the issue next week.

The Conservatives say the financial impact of coronavirus has made it more important to look again at the proposals to get rid of the current two-tiered system outside Nottingham city, and there are signs the government is more open to the idea than before.

Plans were first drawn up to turn Nottinghamshire into a unitary authority two years ago, but they failed to get enough support.
