  8. Thanks for 'angel' nurse after death of family memberpublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 7 September 2020

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

The family of a great-great-grandfather has described how they watched him die through a hospital window because coronavirus restrictions meant they could not be at his side.

Graham Porter, who was 82, died in July after being admitted to Glenfield Hospital in Leicester.

Mr Porter, who preferred to be called Gray, had a pacemaker fitted on New Year's Eve and his family said prior to his death, his "health was slowly deteriorating".

Due to Covid-19 visiting rules at the hospital, only his daughter Nicola Harding was able to be with him as he passed away.

But thanks to an "angel" nurse, some of the other family members were able to ring Ms Harding and say their final goodbyes as they stood outside of his hospital room at the window.

Mr Porter and his wife Margaret - who died three years and one day before her husband - lived in Aylestone.

Ms Harding said: "My niece said, 'It’s OK granddad, go to grandma now', and that's when he closed his eyes and passed.

"Just after a tear rolled down his cheek. The whole thing was like something out of a Hollywood film."

Ms Harding added: "The kindness and compassion and just pure care that the team showed us that day and one nurse in particular, she was an angel, I can't describe her in any other way, it was amazing."

Mr Porter had six children, 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ms Harding shared her story with University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust's board members last week to show the family's appreciation for the way they were treated.
