About 60 firefighters are dealing with a large fire at St Mary's School in Darley Abbey this morning.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to the scene at about 05:25, and arrived to find "a well-developed" fire progressing.
Road closures are in place on Broadway and Duffield Road, and nearby residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed because of the smoke.
Local resident Carlie Grogan said families are "devastated" by the fire, with children already having had six months off school due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Quote MessageThey've only been back at school for the last couple of weeks, and then for the whole school to be burned down it's a really big shock to the community. There's several parents from St Mary's at the top of the hill crying up there.
Carlie Grogan, Darley Abbey resident
To spare pupils' disappointment, the school decided to create its own version of the event.

A pub has been barred from opening after a council said it failed to close by 22:00 in line with coronavirus laws.
The Bounty, in Market Place, Hinckley, was served a closure notice by Leicestershire County Council in partnership with Leicestershire Police.
It comes into force immediately and will be reviewed on a weekly basis.
Gary Connors, head of regulatory services at Leicestershire County Council, said: "The pub failed to ensure it followed the order for all hospitality venues in England to close by 10pm.
"There were also concerns about non-compliance with social distancing in how the venue managed a reduced number of people on the premises.
"These concerns constitute a serious and imminent threat to public health and left us with no alternative but to use our new powers."
The pub's owners have denied any wrongdoing and say they plan to appeal.

A father and son from Farndon are asking for help after their "pride and joy" mountain bikes were stolen from a shed.
Jared Birchley, 53, said he went out on Saturday morning to find the locks on a wooden outhouse had been torn off during the night, with the bikes used by him and his 17-year-old son James no longer inside.
He said the theft has left him "waking up in the night feeling very anxious".
Nottinghamshire Police are investigating the burglary, and are appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.
PC Scott Chambers said one of the bikes has "very distinctive" colouring and should be "noticeable" if anyone came across it on an online sale.
Quote MessageWhen we found the door open and the bikes gone, my heart sank and my first thought was for James, who I knew would be devastated. He also often rides the bike to see his granddad in the village who has dementia to visit him and cook for him and do the odd job for him. It's his main mode of transport really."
