    A van driver who admitted causing the death of another motorist while under the influence of drugs has been jailed.

    Jamie Tarbert's Mercedes Sprinter van crashed with Richard Nicholls' Skoda Yeti, on Rearsby Lane, in Gaddesby, Leicestershire, on 22 July 2019. Both vehicles left the carriageway.

    Mr Nicholls, 34, was flown to hospital, but died of his injuries days later.

    Leicestershire Police said Tarbert, who suffered minor injuries, was under the influence of cocaine at the time of the crash.

    The 32-year-old, of Ashleigh Road, in Glenfield, pleaded guilty to causing death by driving without due care and attention while over the prescribed limit for drugs at Leicester Crown Court on Monday.

    He has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison and banned from driving for five years.

    Det Sgt Paul Hawkins, from the force’s serious collision investigation unit, said: "I am pleased Tarbert admitted his actions, meaning Mr Nicholls’s family did not have to live through his final moments by way of a crown court trial.

    "I hope they feel that justice has been done in this case and the outcome will provide a degree of closure for them.”

    Leicestershire County Council has received 16,000 coronavirus test kits, which provide a result within an hour.

    The authority said the lateral flow tests put the county at the forefront of the plan to expand asymptomatic testing across the country.

    Council leader, Nick Rushton said: “We can now start the work of getting them to ‘hotspots’ where infection rates are high."

    The infection rate in Leicestershire between 19 to 25 November was 193.7 per 100,000 people.

    That's higher than the national rate of 175.8.

    Mike Sandys, director of public health for the county, said the new tests will be used on high-risk groups.

    The council said it can request more testing kits when needed and is looking to have a stock of 10,000 at any one time.

    Meanwhile, in Leicester, the testing kits can't be used because they've been sent without a barcode, which is needed to allow results to be centrally recorded.

    A Nottinghamshire pub has been closed after people were found drinking inside - despite national Covid lockdown laws which ban pubs from serving indoors.

    Rushcliffe Borough Council said they received "numerous calls from the public" saying the Chequers Inn in Cropwell Bishop was open and serving alcohol.

    Some left with boxes of food, as the premises was offering a takeaway service, but a group of men were found drinking alcohol inside.

    The council said management claimed the customers were waiting for their takeaway food inside rather than outside in the cold.

    The pub has now been handed a prohibition order to close for four days and a £1,000 fine.

    It will reopen for takeaways again from Friday.

    Councillor Rob Inglis, from Rushcliffe Borough Council called the breach "a blatant disregard for its rules".

    “We understand the current financial climate for businesses and will now work with the owners in this case to draw up steps they can take to trade safely in future," he added.

    Under the current guidelines all food and drink must be taken away from the premises with no indoor or outdoor seating available.

    These restrictions also remain in tier three areas - which includes Nottinghamshire - once lockdown ends tomorrow.

    Residents have been invited to add their own memories and tributes to a village's Christmas tree.

    The tree, in Draycott's Market Place, has been dubbed a "memory tree" by the community group which organised it.

    Alongside hundreds of coloured lights, the tree includes laminated tributes to family members who have died.

    Draycott Village Fund, which came up with the idea, hopes other local people will follow suit.

    Laura Thurgood, from the group, said: "It's been such an unusual year and so this is a way to remind ourselves of the people we've known, or experiences we've had, and to celebrate them."

    Witnesses to a stabbing who may have been stood at a bus stop when it happened are being urged to speak to police.

    Derbyshire Police said a 14-year-old boy was stabbed on 11 November on Tamworth Road, Sawley, just before 14:40.

    Witnesses told the BBC a bus driver and passengers helped the boy to safety.

    Police are now appealing for anyone who was stood at the bus stop at the time and may have seen what happened to get in touch.

    A 15-year-old boy has since been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and was remanded into custody last month.

    Nottingham's two universities have begun testing thousands of students to enable them to safely leave the city ahead of the winter break during the "student travel window", which is due to start on Thursday.

    The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University have worked with the city council to offer testing for the local student population.

    Students with negative tests can return home but if they test positive, they will be told to stay and self-isolate.

    The travel window runs from 3 to 9 December, with all teaching moved online from 9 December to the end of the term.

    The dates were chosen so that anyone who has to self-isolate should still be able to leave before Christmas.

    Both universities said more information would be made available soon on staggered start dates for next term.

    A hole opened up on the bed of the Ashby Canal at the weekend, causing water to rush out and leaving boats stranded on the canal bed.

    Residents said they heard the sound of running water on Sunday in the section of the canal near Snarestone in Leicestershire.

    Volunteers from the Ashby Canal Association, boaters, a farmer and members of the public were on hand to put in barriers, known as stop planks, to stem the flow.

    A woman arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a man at a flat in Leicester has been released on bail.

    Officers were called to a property in Fosse Road North on Friday morning over concerns for a man inside.

    A post-mortem examination confirmed the man had died from a single stab wound injury to his chest. A knife was recovered from the scene.

    A man and a woman, both 29 and from Leicester, were arrested on suspicion of murder.

    The man was released on bail on Sunday evening.

    Leicestershire Police said the two people arrested were known to the 51-year-old man and the force is not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

    The rate of infection in the area is currently sixth highest in England at 368.3 per 100,000 people.

    However, both places have seen a significant drop in rate of infection since last week.

    Police said a pile-up in Derby this morning was caused by a taxi driver "blasting" through a red light.

    Fire and ambulance crews joined officers at the scene after at least six cars were caught up in the crash at the junction of Burton Road and Manor Road in Littleover at about 11:10.

    An overturned lorry trailer has caused congestion on one of the region's busiest roads.

    A trailer came off a lorry on a roundabout where the A38 meets the M1 at junction 28 in Derbyshire at about 11:20.

    Two lanes on the A38 have been closed and tailbacks of up to 30 minutes have been reported.

    Queues stretched back on to the M1 slip roads, he added.

    The victim has since been discharged from hospital.
