A preliminary bust for a statue of Joseph Merrick, known as the Elephant Man, has been revealed.

Merrick was born in Leicester in 1862 and toured as a sideshow attraction to escape life in the workhouse.

His story was made famous by a 1980 movie starring John Hurt.

Jo Vigor-Mungovin, who has written a book about Merrick and traced his grave, has been trying to raise the estimated £100,000 cost of a bronze statue in Leicester.

She said she had not been expecting the bust, as sculptor Sean Hedges-Quinn was not due to complete the maquette design model for several months.

"I was absolutely stunned and almost fell off my chair with the power of emotion I felt.

"Sean studied Joseph's likeness using the few photographs, death mask and his skeleton that survive today.

"The likeness to Joseph is remarkable and I am so looking forward to seeing the maquette next spring," Ms Vigor-Mungovin said.

She said she has faced accusations of supporting a "freak show" while raising funds for the statue.

    BBC Radio Nottingham

Food bank organisers say they're "absolutely devastated" after a break-in over the weekend.

Broxtowe Community Projects said iPads and a laptop used to organise donations and deliveries were taken from their centre on Queens Road in Beeston.

Trustee Freya Webb arrived on Sunday morning to paint a Christmas mural but instead was confronted with the scene, which she said was "a shock".

She thanked members of the community for dropping in to help clean up, donating to the centre and sending messages of support.

    Nottinghamshire Police are now investigating.
