  14. Friends jailed over botched plan to buy firearmspublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 12 August 2021

    BBC News

Two friends who were part of a failed bid to buy firearms have been jailed after they were caught by their own mobile phone exchanges.

Umair Karim, 22, and Muhammed Hassan, 27, came to the attention of police during an investigation into an unrelated case.

Detectives searched Karim’s home and said they found "a treasure trove" of messages discussing the buying and use of a handgun, and the dealing of drugs.

The force said Karim, of Ferngill Close, The Meadows, bragged about his access to various lethal firearms including a MAC-11 machine pistol and an AK-47 assault rifle.

After his arrest, Karim claimed his knowledge of guns had come from watching videos online, but he had no actual means of getting a firearm,

Hassan, of Serpentine Road, Bradford, declined to answer any questions.

Both men appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday where they admitted to charges of conspiracy to transfer a firearm.

Karim also admitted being concerned in the supply of class B drugs, and Hassan admitted being concerned in the supply of class A, B and C drugs.

They were each jailed for five years and three months.

Det Sgt Julian Eminson-Ferry said: “As these two men have discovered, even the discussion of such offences can have incredibly serious legal consequence. Because, as this case proves, we do not need to recover an actual weapon to prove a conspiracy to acquire and use one."
