The mayor of Mansfield has said he will continue to "hammer home" coronavirus safety messages due to the town's high infection rate.

For much of last week, Mansfield had the highest weekly coronavirus infection rate per 100,000 people in England.

Latest figures show the rate has dropped 12% but it is still the second highest in the country at 523.

    Andy Abrahams

Andy Abrahams fears people have become bored following the well-known public health messages.

He said: "This Covid fatigue, it's almost as soon as you say 'hands, face, space', they have almost turned off.

"We keep hammering home these messages and I will keep hammering them home because schools are going back, infection rates are highly likely to increase."

He also urged people to keep wearing face coverings in enclosed spaces, even though it was no longer a legal requirement.

Emergency services were called to the MFN venue in Eastwood shortly after 19:00 BST last night.

Derbyshire Police said a 32-year-old man was taken to hospital with multiple leg fractures, but added his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

The force said officers spoke to the driver of the car - a red Toyota Yaris GR - but no arrests had been made.

Officers from the Derbyshire roads policing unit said videos circulating on social media showed the car leaving the road and crashing into spectators on a grassed area next to the road.

In a post on Facebook, the team said car meets of this kind had been "regaining some considerable popularity" this summer and while most were attended by genuine car enthusiasts, they were also seeing more "reckless driving performances in an effort to impress strangers".

They added: "Attending these events is not a free pass to drive dangerously. We intend to continue disrupting and prosecute those flouting road traffic laws.

"The investigation into this incident is ongoing but it may provide some food for thought as to whether these events are the right place for you, in particular your children or family - many were in attendance tonight."

The team asked for anyone with video footage of Sunday's event to come forward.
