Rail unions are demanding an investigation after reports that rat droppings were found on a train travelling on the East Coast Mainline.

The RMT has warned passengers and staff of a "major hygiene issue" after droppings were found in a food preparation and kitchen area.

Virgin Trains East Coast says it was an isolated incident caused by a supplier and the area was cleaned before being put back into use.

Here are the latest images of relieved passengers finally leaving a train that was stuck near Peterborough after hitting an object on the track at about 10:30.

The Hull Trains service from London King's Cross came to a halt at Helpston after sustaining what the company described as "catastrophic engine failure".

Passengers were stuck on board for more than four hours, many complaining of no water or working toilets, while the fuel leak was cleared and a rescue train organised.

They have now been moved from the stricken train, but passengers using services between London and the north east are still being warned about delays.

The Managing Director of Hull Trains has apologised to passengers and praised staff on a train which was stranded after a fuel leak between Peterborough and Grantham.

Will Dunnett has also now revealed that the 09:48 London to Hull train didn't strike an object on the tracks, as was originally thought, but it was in fact a "catastrophic failure of the engine".

Earlier today, Hull Trains, Network Rail and the train's driver thought something struck the train between Peterborough and Grantham which ruptured the fuel tanks.

The Minister for Arts is one of the people stuck on a train which has suffered a fuel leak between Peterborough and Grantham, it's emerged.

John Glen has now confirmed he won't be able to announce the winner of the City of Culture 2021 title on the BBC's One Show, as was originally planned.

The announcement will now be made by Phil Redmond, who is Chair of the UK City of Culture panel:

For the first time, Lincolnshire Police are using drones as part of security measures at Lincoln Christmas Market.

There are also armed police and road blocks in place at the four-day market, which is expected to attract 250,000 visitors to the city.

The force says the measures are just a precaution.

The death of an inmate is being investigated at Lincoln Prison.

It's thought it could be a case of Legionnaire's Disease.

Tests are being carried out by the prison service and Public Health England.

No other inmates or staff are thought to have been affected.

The Fatstock Show has taken place at the Louth Cattle Market.

The site was saved after a consultation supported the development of the market instead of losing it altogether.

A large quantity has been seized during a raid by Trading Standards and Lincolnshire Police.

Nico - a tobacco detection dog - found them in the bottom of a bin - hidden by a bag of rubbish.

Two MPs have written to the trust which runs Lincolnshire's hospital demanding Grantham A&E is reopened at night without delay.

Nick Boles and Caroline Johnson say they're extremely concerned a return to 24-hour services has been delayed - despite acceptable staffing levels.

It's been held up while NHS Improvement reviews the situation.

A decision could come next week at a meeting of United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

In the run up to Christmas 'Oh My Cod' in the town is selling battered pigs in blankets and battered mince pies.

A prisoner's died at Lincoln Prison in what's thought could be a case of Legionnaire's disease.

The man died at the jail two days ago and tests are now being carried out by the prison service and Public Health England.

No other inmates or staff are thought to have been affected.
