    British Steel say 400 jobs will go worldwide and that it is currently "evaluating where this streamlining will take place" but that it will impact on Scunthorpe.

    Chief financial officer, Gerald Reichmann says they don't know yet how many jobs will go in North Lincolnshire.

    He said: "We are looking at the whole business of British Steel which includes a site in Scunthorpe but also in Skinningrove, Teeside and in the Netherlands.

    "We are still in the process of evaluating where this streamlining will take place but there will clearly be impact for Scunthorpe."

    Managerial, professional and administrative roles will be affected by the cuts which the company says are necessary to ensure its long term future.

  2. 'No questions asked' in new knife amnestypublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 14 September 2018

    The location of knife amnesty bins in East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire have been revealed by Humberside Police.

    Members of the public will be able to drop off knives in Hull, Beverley, Bridlington, Goole, Grimsby, and Scunthorpe as part of a national amnesty.

    They will not be required to fill in any forms or speak to a police officer if they drop off a knife as part of Operation Sceptre", which begins on Tuesday.

    Det Supt Jo Roe, overseeing the knife amnesty for Humberside Police, said: “No questions will be asked, even if the knife is banned."

    A strike by workers at rail operator Northern who are members of the RMT union will go ahead tomorrow.

    This is the latest strike action by Northern workers in their long-running dispute about the role of guards.

    The union says passenger safety will be put at risk by getting rid of guards and extending driver-only services.

    Talks aimed at resolving the row are due to be held at conciliation service Acas between the RMT and Northern next week, it's been confirmed.

  6. 'Battery may have caused fire' at recyling plantpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 14 September 2018

    A fire at a recycling plant in Lincolnshire in the early hours of this morning may have been caused by a battery, according to the company which runs the site.

    Crews have been at Mid UK Recycling at Barkston Heath since just after 01:00 this morning.

    A company spokesman said: "At the moment we believe the fire started on a waste processing line.

    "The cause may have been a lithium battery which has come in within the kerbside recycling materials we receive, but a full investigation will be carried out in due course."

    Motorists are being warned to expect delays in the Ancaster area because fire crews have had to run hoses across the road to deal with the blaze.

    A team of volunteers is expected to start removing rubbish from Lincolnshire's coastline this weekend as part of a nationwide beach clean.

    Motorists are being warned to expect delays in the Ancaster area because of the ongoing fire in the area.

    Crews have been at Mid UK Recycling at Barkston Heath since just after 01:00 this morning.

    Six appliances remain on scene and they are having to run hoses across the road.

    Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue says it's requested traffic management to help, but in the meantime is advising people to avoid the area.

    The A153 and B6403 crossroads are particularly busy.

    British Steel, one of the biggest employers in Scunthorpe, is to cut 400 jobs worldwide - although there's no information on where the cuts will be.

    British Steel employs 5,000 people and plans to reduce 400 "managerial, professional and administrative roles" at its operations throughout the UK, Ireland, France and the Netherlands.

    At present, there is no breakdown of the figures or information about whether any of the jobs which are going will be at the Scunthorpe site.

    A spokesperson for the National Trade Union Steel Coordinating Committee said: "This announcement will come as a body blow to the workforce who have already made huge sacrifices to make the business sustainable."

    The company has also confirmed it's "pressing ahead" with a £50m upgrade to its Scunthorpe rod mill, announced in July.

    Drones and thermal imaging cameras are being used at the scene of a fire near Ancaster to find hotspots.

    Plans for a huge waste plant are on display in Boston today in an attempt to gather the opinions of residents.

    The project which will require government approval, will take rubbish from across the UK and turn it into enough energy to power more than half of Lincolnshire's homes.

    Alternative Use Boston Projects are behind the plans and the site will be just next to the Haven (pictured above).

    Dozens of firefighters have been tackling a large fire near Ancaster through the night.

    The blaze, at the MID UK recycling centre, sent thick plumes of smoke into the air.

    But the fire service say the smoke is not toxic.

    At its peak, a dozen fire engines were at the fire which was classified as a 'major incident'.

    However, after working through the night it was brought under control.

    The nearby A153 is closed between the junction of the A607 at Honington, and B6403 crossroads.

    Humberside Police says it's had reports from a number of people who say they've received calls from con-artists posing as anti-fraud officers.

    Police say it's an attempt to trick people into handing over their cash and hard earned savings.

    Anyone who receives a suspicious call is being reminded never to give out personal details and never to hand over any money or move it to another account suggested by the caller.
