The lorry - carrying 23 tonnes of sulphuric acid - overturned near Colsterworth in Lincolnshire, closing the road between Grantham and Stamford.

All the traffic is being diverted on the A607 and A606 through Rutland and Melton Mowbray, causing severe disruption in the area.

Although police said the acid hasn't leaked onto the road, because of the size of the lorry it is expected to take several hours to recover the vehicle and reopen the A1.
