We've been talking to Highways England who are responsible for the road and they have done some work around average speed cameras. However, there are fundamentally dangerous aspects with the way that the road has been improved, particularly around slip lane lengths and, frankly, something needs to be done because the continual loss of life is unacceptable."

Richard Davies, County Councillor in charge of highways

Highways England says it's working on a study looking at safety along the whole of the A1.

This will help identify areas along that stretch of road that need improvement, the agency adds.
