  6. RMT union: Underground bosses agree with uspublished at 08:24 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2017

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

More from John Leach of the RMT. He tells Today that London Underground has “agreed with us in writing they need more people to do the job but when we ask them how many they tell us 200”.

He defends the strike action saying of course the RMT would like to have avoided today’s strike adding those that are on strike are the type of people that manage crowd control within stations and monitor CCTV rather than Tube drivers.

He says the unions gave TfL the maximum period of time to resolve the dispute under strike legislation but TfL still failed to reach agreement.

  10. Tube strike an issue of safety - RMTpublished at 08:13 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2017

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

John Leach, RMT London regional organiser, tells the Today programme the fundamental cause of today’s strike is the closure by TfL of a number of station control rooms and the shedding of 834 staff.

He says this has led to safety concerns particularly over overcrowding at Tube stations.

“I’m afraid we’re up against a brick wall because we don’t have resources,” Mr Leach says.

“At director level and above they tell us they’ve got no money,” he adds but he says London Underground executives agree with the unions that there are genuine safety concerns that have been created by the closure of certain Tube station control rooms and the reduction in staff.

“You can’t carry a million people more each day with 834 fewer front line station staff,” Mr Leach adds.
