    Speaking after the sentencing of Thomas Eastwood, for squirting a man with corrosive liquid, police called it a "malicious act on an innocent man".

    Det Ch Insp Neil Pudney said: "The victim had acted as a good citizen, stepping in to break up a fight and preventing someone from getting injured.

    "Thomas Eastwood responded with a callous act without care or consideration for the impact it would have.

    "I am pleased a dangerous man is off the streets of Essex.

    "Most importantly I want to praise the victim for his courage through the investigation and hope this sentence brings some solace."

    During sentencing at Basildon Crown Court, the victim was granted a reward of £1,000 for his role in attempting to break up the fight outside The Barge pub on London Road in Vange.

    A man who squirted corrosive liquid in the face of a man, who was attempting to break up a fight among a group of youths, has been jailed for 10 years.

    The 44-year-old man, who isn't being named, was driving outside The Barge pub in Vange, Basildon, when he attempted to disperse the youths in March last year.

    Thomas Eastwood then pulled up in a van and, while the victim explained what had been happening, squirted a concentrated alkaline substance in his face.

    Members of the public heard his screams and came to his aid and he was taken to hospital.

    Essex Police described his injuries as something "he'll have to live with for the rest of his life".

    Eastwood, 22, of Langlands Drive, Dartford, Kent, was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent at Basildon Crown Court during a trial in January and today he was sentenced.

    Sutton United has accepted the resignation of reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw, who is under investigation for potentially breaching betting rules.

    The Gambling Commission and Football Association is investigating if there was a breach of betting regulations after the 46-year-old ate a pie during Monday's FA Cup loss to Arsenal.

    A bookmaker had offered odds of 8-1 that Shaw would eat a pie on camera.

    "What happened didn't make us look very professional," said boss Paul Doswell.

    Fans of David Bowie hope ZiggyZag, a red and blue, stainless steel sculpture, standing three-storeys high and embedded in the pavement in Brixton, can become a lasting memorial to the artist who passed away in January 2016

    Local designers This Ain't Rock 'n' Roll, who are campaigning for the memorial, said: "When David Bowie died, the world lost an irreplaceable talent. Brixton also lost a son. David Bowie, our Brixton boy."

    So far, they have raised £16,993 towards their £1m target for the work.
