  2. Lower Thames Crossing decision 'could be announced later this week' published at 11:18 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2017

    Leanne Rinne
    BBC Reporter

BBC South East has been told that a decision on the location of a new Lower Thames Crossing could be announced later this week.

Last year ministers promised an announcement "in due course" following the largest public consultation for a road project the country's ever seen.

Highways England is  recommending option 'C'  - which would see a road connect the M2 with the M25 from the east of Gravesend across to Tilbury in Essex - tunnelling under the Thames near the village of Higham.

Here's analysis from BBC South East reporter Leanne Rinne.

    Quote Message

This decision has been controversial because while most people agree that the congestion at Dartford is a problem, when it comes to building new tunnels and new roads, not many people want it on their doorstep.

    Quote Message

Highways England have made it very clear that they think the best option is to go from Gravesend to Tilbury. They say that will provide the economic benefits and cut journey times.

    Quote Message

But for many years there have been campaigners who say they want to see a new crossing near the existing one. They say that will tackle the congestion more head on.

    Quote Message

Just last year a study found that the road leading to the Dartford Crossing is one of the slowest in the UK and just last month the Federation of Small Businesses wrote to the Government urging ministers to guarantee the earliest delivery of the new crossing.

    Quote Message

They say delays in making an announcement threatens to bring the South East to a standstill. After years of discussions and proposals, we understand this announcement could be as early as Thursday.

A whirl of cream topped with parasites and a recreation of a protective deity destroyed by Islamic State in Iraq will go on display on Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth.

The two artworks have been chosen to reside at the landmark spot in London - currently home to a bronze, thumbs up sign - in 2018 and 2020.

Lamassu, a winged bull which guarded the entrance to the Nergal Gate of Nineveh from 700BC, will be remade out of empty, date syrup cans, from Iraq.

The deity was destroyed, along with other artefacts in the Mosul Museum, by terror group IS in 2015.

US artist Michael Rakowitz has been attempting to remake over 7,000 archaeological artefacts looted from Iraq, in a project entitled The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist, since 2006.

He said that the date syrup cans represented the once-thriving industry in Iraq decimated by war.

The deity will go on display in 2018 and will be followed by The End, by British artist Heather Phillipson - a sculpture of a scoop of cream, topped with a cherry, a drone and a fly - in 2020.
